Oh wow, 5th place for Baiba
@brunamoura (who, in case someone missed it, is coached by Baiba) nearly punched the chair next to me in half when she missed that 10th shot, but after that....jubilation and pride and everything, it's been an hour since we watched her finish and we're both still pumped up with adrenaline

Meanwhile in Brazil the South American Championships are going on in 30 degrees (in the early morning, after 9am it goes way above that, up to 37-39 later in the day). Yesterday were the freestyle sprints, with Victor Santos taking the men's title, ahead of Rhaick Bomfim, who competed in the early 2020 Youth Olympics and then just stopped altogether, but managed to get out of the situation and pick up the training again. Sebastian Endrestad made the podium somewhat international with a bronze medal for Chile. Claudio Gustavo Oliveira was the fastest in qualifying, but in finals had to compete with the juniors.

In the women's qualifying, Duda Ribeira was the fastest, but to everyone's surprise - her own, her coach, her competitors - she was then basically forced to start in the junior's final, where she apologized to the other juniors who were definitely not counting on that. It was also a shame for the senior race, where a nice fight between Duda and our very own Totallympian @brunamoura was expected, but yeah, that didn't happen.

Thank you so much @justony😁
I am sorry time was a little too short for a longer talk, but it was really nice to meet you!
Hopefully coming seasons I will be racing in Slovenia again (I love the country!) and we will have time for a coffee and a lot more talking 😁

As some of you already know, on Sunday I went to Planica. I am regular guest of Ski Flying for 25 years, so though I heard, how high they put prices and there is not a lot of home crowd, I decided to visit our treasure in heart of national park.
Luckily I am quite frequent Totallympian, and with that I had an honour to meet in person our star, future Olympian. I know I have already thank you, but once more, @brunamoura, thanks for those five minutes of your time and of course, though I would come to see competitions anyway, thank you for tickets.
Only thing I regret is we did not have time for a bit longer talk, because your story is fascinating, but did not wanna bother your pre race time.
So, @heywoodu, take good care of her, when she comes back home, and when you are next time around (maybe both), do send me a PM, and maybe will grab a coffee.

While calling Bruna after her individual sprint qualifying on Thursday, while she was standing in that warmup/cooldown area where athletes do their last-minute prep and stuff, she at some point walked away for a second. I heard some talking in the background, and later she told me it was the Mexican she had waited for at the finish, Regina (they've known each other for a while). While they were talking, apparently one Jessie Diggins walked by and was super excited about Regina's Mexican race suit, offering a swap with her American one, and after some hesitation on the other side, Diggins made it really clear it was definitely not a joke
So they got in touch later to set a place to meet, and now:

Anyhow, great race by Bruna, only 1,5s behind Jaque is one of the closest - if not the closest - margins ever between them! Both did excellent

The front teams go slowly, the backmarkers just have a repeat of their individual qualifying. The only teams for whom this is remotely interesting are the teams who are really fighting for those positions around the 15th spot.
It should at the very least provide FIS points, since it's simply an individual qualifying race.

I wonder if Swedish media posted something about it somewhere. I can't find it, but yesterday out of nowhere two unknown (to us) Swedish names donated something on her crowdfunding page, so I wonder where they heard about it

By the way, not expecting too much from Bruna today (neither is she). It's classic style, which she's normally pretty good at, but in classic you do need to kick your foot against the snow fairly strong to get the best grip your skis can offer, but exactly that - pushing down hard with the feet - is still a significant problem with the foot that was partially crushed last year. We'll see what happens, but yesterday she kept 29 women behind her and if she can do something similar today that would already be amazing. I'm hoping for 20 women or so behind her, so top-80 or so today
And even much more than in freestyle, the preparation of the skis is absolutely crucial, so hopefully they're done good, but that's out of her control of course.

Just missed her call because her boss was calling me (to say free days are no problem if she wants to stay for the 10k ), so I couldn't confirm it yet, but I'm 99% sure I heard a HUGE scream from Bruna in the background when one of the athletes finished a few seconds slower (and so Bruna's top-10 was as good as sure)

Yeah that was cool to see! I don't care if you finish 1st or 25th, if you finish the way Beyrami did, 100% fighting to the limit, you've automatically got my respect

I'm glad I didn't switch to watch something else (our volleyball league) that last scene when Beyrami crossed the line was "fun" mostly the reaction of her teammates. "yay you got Eight, EIIIGHHHT"
