  1. Trying to make sense of where everything stands for the quotas. I am listing the nations that are currently in qualifying positions and the next 5 nations that are closest to them.   2. Apparently 300 thousand tickets have been sold so far. 52.3% of ticket holders are Hungarian, the rest are foreigners. Tickets have been bought in 103 countries. That seems like a lot of foreign spectators. Probably the most for a sport event in Hungary, only the EURO2020 matches can rival with that.
  3. Konstanze Klosterhalfen officially out due to injury. On a more cheerful note, Heroes Square is getting ready for the marathon and race walking events.
  4. I think it's too early to say something definitive about the weather for the second half of the Worlds, but it's safe to say at this point that we can expect some intense heat for the first weekend. There might be around 30 Celsius during the men's 100m final.
  5. Why do you mean about "universality"? An African country, Egypt, has a legit chance winning Olympic and WCh medals, which is something you don't see in many Olympic sports. The promotion sucks, but that's true about a lot of Olympic sports, just look at sailing atm. At the very least pentathlon doesn't require any additional venues, and it will be even cheaper to organize once the hosts won't have to provide horses for an event. I have been watching old Olympic footage recently and I think modern pentathlon improved the most in the past 20-30 years compared to all the Olympic sports. The horse lottery is the worst part about it now and that will be gone after Paris. I don't know what else people expect from this sport, it has evolved so much to make it more watchable.

  7. After the 4th places at the Elite Worlds and Olympics this may not look like a huge deal, but that's a gold for Vas and Hungary. U23 world champion!

  11. This U23 race inside the Elite race is kinda nonsensical. They don't even have radio to tell them how the U23 race stands. You can't even make a proper strategy for this, just hope that everything falls into the right place inside the Elite race.
  12. Everything is at near completion now, they are building the spectator zone and the medal plaza at the stadium. There will be a second spectator zone at Erzsébet Square.
  13. It looks like the medal ceremonies will take place before the evening sessions, or at least that's what Eurosport's streaming schedule shows us at the moment.

  15. So what happens if we send Vas in both Road and MB? I think that's very likely now, she's doing the MB + Road combo at the Worlds where the time gap is far less between the MB and the Road race than in the Paris schedule. Does our Road or MB quota get reallocated? I can't find any rules for this. Sending the same athlete in two disciplines essentially reduces the overall cycling field if they don't reallocate one of her quotas. What I am not sure about is this: can a cyclist who takes a Road quota also show up for the MB race? Or the same in reverse. Technically we are winning two female athlete quotas in cycling (1 in Road, 1 in MB), but we are only sending one athlete if this crossing of disciplines is only allowed if the cyclist has to use up both the Road and the MB quotas.
  16. Isn't her withdrawal almost certain at this point as well? Why would they talk about skipping the Worlds a few days before the event if they show up here anyway?

On a less dark note, I see that we finally have a map of the venue and its surroundings. https://assets.aws.worldathletics.org/document/64d3777c41260e1767542b83.pdf This sure will be a test of the public transport as tram 1, 2 and 24 will be overloaded like they never have been before. H7 might be the best option for anyone who wants to travel in the direction of the city centre. I wonder when the medal ceremonies will take place at the "medal plaza". I think they should have it between the sessions, right after the morning session. But I can't find any information about that. There should be a separate broadcast window for that, but I am not seeing it on the program.
  18. Are these "minor injuries" are really just minor injuries, or is there some kind of advancement in the anti-doping program and some training programs are avoiding the Worlds deliberately? It did see some rumors about this online now that these announced injuries and recently announced doping violations are stating to add up, but yeah, they are just rumors.
  19. I think based on the current Olympic ranking the U23 quotas would go to + (men's) and + (women's).
  20. Vas has to race more in MB, you can't just show up to the Worlds with almost no MB preparation and win a medal. Still, 5th place should be enough for a quota, unless Canada somehow fails to win the quota on the ranking.
  21. Yeah, sailing appears to be a mess of a sport. If you can't follow 90% of the action at the World champs on TV, maybe that sport doesn't belong on the Olympic program. This isn't even a case where you only miss unimportant parts of the competition. The medals and even the gold medal can be decided based on races that you are unable to watch. We are in 2023, I don't know how this is acceptable for an Olympic sport. How can sailing can away with this while pentathlon is in danger because someone punched a horse.
  22. I mean, this goes without saying. You can see in the medal and gold medal distribution of the Olympic Games. The moment the Eastern European block moved into a capitalist system, they immediately lost ground compared to Western Europe at the Games. The Games were far less one sided 20-30 years ago. Hungary is only managing to hold on somewhat successfully because Orbán pretty much created the same centralized system that worked during the Soviet era, he's putting an insane amount of state funds into Hungarian sports. We would be on the level of Bulgaria if Orbán wouldn't view sports as an important part of the Hungarian national pride/spirit. And you can't possibly expect Hungarian sports to work on this level in any other system, we are waaay too behind Western Europe and we will never catch them, even if a liberal capitalist genius takes over as PM, it's impossible.
  23. There are no independent athletes. You can never ever remove the nationality of a person, they are born with it. And if that person achieves something extraordinary, the state and its people will use it for national pride. As long as we have nation states, this will not change. Hungarian people even take pride in the fact that Hungarian born scientists helped to build the first nuclear bomb (Teller and Szilárd, they are featured in the new Oppenheimer movie), and they were as far removed from the Hungarian state as any Hungarian born person can be on this world. You can't make anything apolitical, it's not how the world works.
