Sprint Canoeing ICF World Championships 2023

There are two stories here for Hungarian canoeing: On one hand we did well in the Olympic qualification, 15 quotas is an acceptable outcome and I think we will win the other 3 next year in Szeged. On the other hand this is a disaster in terms of gold medals. ZERO gold medals in the Olympic events. Only one gold medal overall before the 5000m finals... Our gold medal favorites (Varga, Kopasz) lost and most of our medal favorites disappointed. A similar result in Paris would be seen as a disaster. The 3 gold medals of London, Rio and Tokyo are a distant memory at this point, the good days are over if we don't get our shit together. -

And finally, for the men's C2, it's very simple. As the C2 is the largest boat in that discipline, everyone in the final is eligible for the C2 quotas. Only one boat will miss out on the qualification. Two reallocation are possible in MC1: If FUKSA, Martin (1993) wins the C2 quota, his C1 quota gets reallocated to next highest ranked eligible athlete If wins their C2 quotas, their host quota in C1 gets reallocated to the next highest ranked eligible athlete The next two eligible athletes in MC1 are... Women's kayak is much easier because all 18 athletes in the WK2 final are eligible for the quotas, none of them were in the K4 boats that qualified. Three reallocations are possible in WK1. If JORGENSEN, Emma Aastrand (1996) wins the K2 quota, her K1 quota gets reallocated to the next highest ranked eligible athlete. If wins their K2 quotas, the host quota in K1 gets reallocated to the next highest ranked eligible athlete If wins 7 athlete quotas, their K1 quota gets reallocated to the next highest ranked eligible athlete. The next three eligible athletes in WK1 are... GOVORCINOVIC, Anamaria (1997) GEORGIEVA, Yoana (2002) CONTRERAS, Isabel (1989) - Spain may reach 7 athlete quotas with this, so in that case the next best ranked eligible athlete is... OLIVIER, Esti (1992) The one thing I am not sure of is when the reallocation happens for nations that won more than 6 quotas in men's/women's kayak. For some reason the document of the Olympic qualification system doesn't specify it. It may only happen when the NOC confirms which athlete quotas they want to use up. But now that we don't have the K1 200, it should be quite obvious that Germany will take the K2 and K4 quotas while they give the K1 quota back. -

Both Australians are eligible for the K2 quota because Green currently has a K1 athlete quota, not K4, while the other Australian wasn't in the K4 boat, I mixed them up because they have the same surname. So these athletes in the men's K2 final are eligible for athlete quotas in that race: SPICAR, Jakub (1993) HAVEL, Daniel (1991) DEL RIO, Adrian (2002) FRANK, Felix (1993) HILLER, Martin (2000) OLIJNIK, Andrej (1987) RIBEIRO, Joao (1989) BAPTISTA, Messias (1999) KOPASZ, Balint (1997) VAN DER WESTHUYZEN, Jean (1998) GREEN, Thomas (1999) HOLPERT, Ervin (1986) DRAGOSAVLJEVIC, Marko (1994) So 13 athletes can take the K2 quotas and there are 12 quotas available in the race. And if Green wins the K2 quota, his K1 quota will get reallocated to CUBELOS, Francisco (1992) If Germany wins 7 athlete quotas, their K1 quota will get reallocated to the next athlete in K1, so either Cubelos or NATHELL, Martin (1995) -
The 4x400 girls broke the oldest Hungarian record in athletics from 1980, fitting end for the Hungarian team at these Worlds. Well done, everyone.

Nope, I made one mistake... There are two van der Westhuyzen, Pierre was in the K4 boat, while Jean is in the K2 boat. So we got 5 athletes who won quotas in K4, not 6. -

Oh wait... I think everyone in the men's K2 final already won the quotas by default. LOL I mean, there are 18 athletes in the men's K2 final and only 12 of them can win quotas there as the other 6 athletes won quotas in K4. And the available athlete quotas in K2 is precisely 12. So the race for the men's K2 quotas is already over, I guess? -

Well, 5 out of the 9 boats in the final have at least one athlete who already qualified in the K4. Which means that the 7th placed will earn quotas via reallocation. Maybe even the 8th placed boat. The most extreme scenario is 6 athlete quota reallocation, in that case I think even the 9th placed boat wins quotas. And on top of that if Green wins a quota in K2, his K1 quota will get reallocated to Cubelos. -

Disaster for us in women's K2... not even B-final. Our entire women's team is just in terrible shape. It's one thing for us to not be as strong as in our most dominant era, but this is simply unacceptable. I think we will still win that K2 quota next year in Szeged with the help of a returning Kozák, but our current state is still depressing. -

In the old system they were filling up larger boats with reallocated quotas, but that's not the case in the new system, so I think there is no chance for a reallocation. They will have to win the quota at the European qualifiers. -

It's one of the best from a casual viewer's perspective, which I think was the goal here. Basically have everything interesting in a 3-hour window every day in the evening, this way the Worlds have an easier time to fight for the attention of the public. I mean, even 3 hours are too long for most people these days, I wouldn't be surprised if at some point the evening sessions will be crammed into two hours like the Diamond League.
-
Now that the Worlds is in its final stages I just want to say: I would have never ever expected to see this many spectators in Hungary for athletics. I mean, look at how many people are in the stadium for a morning session of decathlon when we don't even have a Hungarian in decathlon. The organizers went above and beyond to market this event to the public and it clearly payed off in a country that never had any big traditions in athletics beyond hammer throw. It's the ultimate proof that Hungarians like big sport events and they show up in big numbers even when we don't have a star on the level of Katinka Hosszú or Kristóf Milák.

Yes, I think that's the idea because that's exactly our plan in men's kayak. 4 athlete quotas in K4, +1 athlete quota in K2 (Kopasz) and +1 athlete quota in K1 (Varga).
