  1. Blunk said in the kiss and cry that they should call off the contest. Back to back 1620s in these shitty conditions from Porteous is ridicukous.
  2. I genuinely don't get the impression China wanted to host these Olympics all that badly. There just happened to be an opportunity and they took it, but when Beijing bid for 2022 it felt more like laying the groundwork for a future bid than a real attempt at winning. Then all the cities, one by one, withdrew.
  3. After the under-performance in the 500m this medal by Laurent Dubreuil feel like, to quote Petra Majdič, a gold with little diamonds in it.
  4. I'm honestly not sure if there were bribes involved or if it was legitimate concerns that wouldn't be able to deliver the games, but it is absolutely clear that the IOC executives put a lot of pressure on the membership to select Beijing over Almaty. TBH given the current unrest in Kazakhstan I think they might have had a point.
  5. Kind of annoyed at that tbh. Sildaru owes the Estonian setup nothing, she's basically a one woman show. She under-performed at these Olympics, not sure if it's nerves, equipment or an injury. But really not representative of her career so far. Also, she unfortunately finished where she deserved to finish yesterday based on the performances.
  6. No, OAR, a completely different and unrelated NOC, is the defending champion. ROC is making it's debut in this sport :P (The whole Sochi systematic doping situation is depressing but I'm going to continue having fun w/ these WADA sanctions and all the ways in which they mess up Olympic trivia)
  7. Based on the posted point totals I'm pretty sure the outcome of the gold medal match also determined whether or won the prediction contest :P
  8. [hide] Knockout Round February 15th - February 20th, 2022 Bronze Medal Match Date & Time (GMT +8) Nation 1 T1 T2 Nation 2 February 19th 2022, h. 21:10 Sweden 1 Slovakia Gold Medal Match Date & Time (GMT +8) Nation 1 T1 T2 Nation 2 February 20th 2022, h. 12:10 Finland 1 ROC [/hide]
  9. Always thought that was a terrible way to determine the bracket in this event. That's a huge shame. legitimately was very much a medal contender in this event in 2018.
  10. Congrats to the for winning their first ever Olympic medal in hockey! What a huge achievement for this long suffering hockey program! (Sorry for our friends from and , but almost every neutral is going to be rooting for and )
  11. Pretty big upsets in both semis. and are going to be pretty annoyed to be meeting each other in the bronze medal game.
  12. I mean, she's the best female ski slopestyle skier ever by a decent margin. It happened to her twice these Olympics, so I'm guessing she had some equipment issues. She didn't seem quite at her best in general tbh.
  13. NBC keeps trying to make the Gu - Sildaru Olympic rivalry happen, and like gold - gold - silver vs. did not qualify - 4th - bronze just doesn't make it look like much of a contest.
  14. Given how dominant Gu is I guess going 2-3 is about as good as can be expected.
  15. I get that impression of Humphries too, but ridiculous stories about BCS keep coming out too. I don't think we can just dismiss all the criticisms Humphries had because she's has personality issues, because clearly she was not the only problem in that setup.
  16. Canada is basically the third or fourth best curling country at the moment (behind and debatably ) when you look at the results from PC 2018 until now at worlds and the Olympics. I’d argue at the very least that the selection process for the Olympics and for Worlds has to change.
  17. Some very unhappy Skeleton sliders in this thread. It appears that a lot of the Skeleton OTP money has gone into unspecified “legal fees” 🤔 Starting to think Humphries might have had the right idea.
  18. But apparently it's the people who want Eteri to be held accountable for how she treats literal children who think "Russians are robots".
  19. Easier to blame than to look inward. Everyone looked the other way for years as USA Gymnastics was abusing children. It took one of the most prolific (for lack of a better word) child sexual abuser of all times being unearthed for people to finally take a critical look at Béla and Mártha Károlyi. I see more or less the same patterns around Eteri Tutberidze and Sambo 70. People don't want to consider that she might be fostering an abusive environment because she produces winner after winner.
  20. If she wasn't under the age of 16 she wouldn't have been allowed to compete. Ask any other athlete that have been provisionally suspended then cleared how fair it was for Valieva to be allowed to compete here. Valieva is getting preferential treatment on account of her age, and that's kind of problematic given it's happening at the Olympics. Though what really angers me is that I feel I'm seeing the next abuse scandal involving children's well being being sacrificed at the altar of sports, and the reaction in some corners is simply to dismiss it entirely. There were already a lot of red flags around Sambo 70 before this whole doping situation.
  21. It's weird to blame the media and not the adults in her entourage who decide to give her banned drugs.
