This rule is barely inforced, only by federations to have a backing when they don't want to allow an athlete who refuses to defend the country in DC/BJKC (RSA with Kevin Anderson and CRO with Ivo Karlovic and TPE with Hsieh Su-wei with come to mind).
Whoever wrote/comissioned this article obviously never followed tennis Olympic qualification.
'inside the games' writers are notoriously uninformed, and often just plain wrong. Blog posts more than news.

Getting beat by is definitely an interesting way for them start
What a brutal collapse in the 3rd. No idea they would be that bad on defense since every game in the past two years they have always had the puck. Thailand literally scored on every good chance they had with really great passing. Hard to imagine anyone beating Thailand now, but who knows?

Kyrgyzstan will win easily, no idea who the relegated team will be.

And for tennis I think it makes some sense, the players are very loosely tied to their national federation and the Russian and Bielorissuan players on tour all seem to live in the US, the Caribbeans or in Western Europe anyway.
very true. I wonder if they will allow Russians and Belorussian doubles entrants. I would think that would fall under the IOC direction to not allow team entries, but maybe not.

Thanks for your observation.
About Riera instead of Carle, It is because the tennis players need to be in top 400, otherwise they can't use the quota earned at Panamerican Games.
As for Raducanu instead of Osaka... you are right, my bad. In the last updates Osaka didn't appear on Top 400 (at least if I remember well ) then I completely forgot her.
I will fix it, thanks
Carle is at 101 in your list,

very good work but I don't understand two things; Why Riera instead of Carle from the Pan Am qualifiers, and why Raducanu for the Legacy quota (should be Osaka or even Andreescu before her).

Don't know if anyone knows what is up with Italy's olympic preparation. World juniors the year before the Olympics has been the test event for the host since 1997, but WCF juniors page says that Italy has not confirmed hosting of the 2025 event yet. Kind of weird to not have a concise plan for the test events I think.

so diaz acosta is making the most of home tournaments, but still has work to do. Even though he has moved into the top four amongst Argentina, he is not there yet just considering points counting toward Olympics.

Estonia had the edge on Ukraine in 2018 and 2019, but since then Ukraine has been better. How fun would it be to have OT in that game?
Romania has no real chance against GB; in recent history against this level of opponent (Division 1A or better) they have one win (against Lithuania) and not many games that were even close.
-
so I expected Romania vs China would be a stinker of a game, but China is on the board first. Disappointed that I can't find a stream for it.
-
so looking at the rosters, China has no chance. GBR smoked Romania in last year's WC so it is doubtful that the British will even have a close game. Hope I am wrong and there is some excitement though.
-
kind of weird, just a few days away and the IIHF has not posted schedules for Cardiff or Sosnowiec.
-
Could also add Italy having 12 qualified curlers, they are confirmed in all three events.
-
It will be interesting to see if Diaz Acosta actually ends up qualifying for the Olympics. At this point in the Olympic cycle there are at least four from Argentina in Direct Acceptance position and he is only the 9th best from his NOC at 326 points.

I wonder what has happened with the IIHF Directorate Awards. Usually presented on ice at the close of the final game and/or Bronze medal game. Did I miss some news about it?
-
can you imagine Canada win here with the reward that they play Italy again in the semis?

I love your profile pic. Good laugh in this hard time, thanks.
there is a full body element to it as well, and it fits over helmet and equipment. Can do a couple laps around the ice during warm up with it on at tournaments. Play a bugle while doing it sometimes also.

So Canada is screwed on every single tie-breaking scenario. They have to beat Italy period.
-
-
no way, did that just happen?
-
Sweden ties it up too at eight, crazy.
-
and who the heck can beat Italy anyway, incredible.

TSN broadcast is so irritating, they keep saying that Japan has to win in regulation time to avoid relegation. You would hope for such an important game they would understand the rules.
I feel embarrassed for them, they made it even worse by saying that Denmark only needs one point. If they get one point either Japan or China advances. Somebody quietly got it right by saying that Japan just needs one more goal to relegate China, but does not seem to want to argue or correct on air I guess.
