Summer Olympic Games 2020 Team Sports Early Qualification Predictions

All these teams except women's volley are good enough to qualify in world level qualifiers (some of them qualified that way).

Of course they might be good enough to qualify on a world level (however, I doubt it for Argentina's Handball team), but that is not the point. The point is that in most American continental qualifiers there are only very few competitive teams, so the only World class team gets basically a free pass.

For example: Women's football. Of course, USA and CAN are world class and it is absolutely desirable to have them at the Olympics. But the qualifier is ridiculous: Two competitive teams compete for two direct qualification places, wow. In Europe, however, there are six or seven World class teams competing for three places. That sucks and is beyond comparability. And please, don't come around with "Costa Rica improved a lot lately" ... CRC would not even have a chance for qualification to the European Championships.

Nearly the same in Pan American hockey: One very good team (ARG), one good team (CAN) competing for one direct place is not comparable with the depth (4-5 very good teams) in European hockey.

Canada has qualified in Football, Volleyball, Hockey, Rugby Sevens, Softball and Water Polo (and will qualify im Basketball, short of a disaster). So no, not only the USA can match that :P

I was not clear enough that i was referring to Mens team sports & Argentina Mens teams.

In womens team sports the situation and the competition level is very different

  • 2 weeks later...

So many people picked Greece to qualify in women's water polo, women's basketball, and men's basketball and it looks like we'll get none of them in the end

(Yes we got men's water polo at least)

    • Honestly, I think you guys have a much better chance of success here than we do. It's already difficult to maintain this sport, and with this ridiculous format this year, things have gotten even worse. Years and years participating in the elite and we haven't been able to evolve; it was just a waste.

    • Another weak result for our athletics team, which is typical; without Caio or Alisson, our chances of a medal in any high-level tournament are almost zero.   However, Juliana's result in the women's pole vault was a great 7th place. She is improving rapidly and still has a lot of room for growth.
