Need to see draw document. I think there are additional rules for groups. IIRC, atleast in Singles, it was like first seeds are placed, then those ranked 16-32 or something like that and then rest. Organizers wouldn’t want a group of 1,14,15,16 so there must be something to prevent that.

Top 4 is really tough specially considering they skipped World Championship but if they keep on getting the wins who knows. :fingers:

What I understand is the that in singles there are 1-13 seeds which are placed in 16 groups but the rest shall be drawn randomly. In 2016, Viktor Axelsen got a tough group and was paired with Boonsak Poonsana (15th rank) and Lee Dong Keun (14th rank). The other groups were fairly equal. The knockout draw is based on seeding.

Similarly in doubles, only 4 pairs get seeded and placed in different groups and the rest are drawn randomly. In 2016, in men's doubles the Indian pair of Manu-Sumeeth were drawn with Japan (rank 6), China (rank 5) and Indonesia (rank 2). After the group stage there was a knockout draw

Ideally all the players should be seeded so the groups are relatively equal

What could be a realistic number of medals in the Olympics. It would be the bad men and women again - Wrestling, Boxing and Shooting. Badminton could also chip in. The rest are also-ran types.

Yeah! In singles, players will be seeded from 13 to 16 depending on how many players finally qualify. There are a few P&C involved in that...the idea is to keep seeds separated. So the situation you mentioned can happen if there only top 13 seeds. That’s what the rules suggest. But in doubles, it’s pretty straight forward — 4 groups and 4 seeds, each separated in different groups. And then rest of the pool gets drawn

My realistic but slightly pessimistic view

I mean, it's not like the Ukrainian federation, or any single federation for that matter, has the power to strip her of her world and European championships medals I hope (not for her sake, but because that would be a super weird precedent)
