It's not the girls' fault, but EHF took the correct decision. Their government forced them to withdraw for political reason. By the way, if you read EHF rules, this is the minimum (and automatic) sanction...they could have banned the Serbian U20 for 2 more competitions for this political withdrawl

"If the withdrawal takes place after the draw of the qualification, the team may
additionally be suspended from participation in EHF national team
competitions of the corresponding age category and gender for up to two (2)
competitions, including the respective qualification rounds."

And that is sad. Apart from it being rather dumb from the federation to not separate two countries of which even a child can predict things have a good chance of not going well..

So when an Iranian is forced to withdraw to avoid an Israeli in judo for example, is it IJF's fault because in the draw they did not keep them separate until the final?

Serbians could have organized their home match anywhere else if there were security concerns and but they wanted to play.

I think there's a difference between sports with a bracket-like format compared to tournaments where the whole thing is divided in groups, like qualifying tournaments. Not really comparable to for example a regular judo or wrestling competition :)

Why? :) There is no difference in the draw if you want to keep 2 teams/athletes separate...you just decide that when one of them is drawn in the first half of the groups/bracket, the other one is drawn in the second half.

Anyway, let's close it here...for me the important is being coherent and know the fact that you can't refuse to play an opponent because you don't recognise their country and expect that there will be no consequences.

Yep, let's agree to strongly disagree :)

You do realize that the same thing could have occurred at the tournament proper, not just qualifications? :p

More news

On Friday evening further communications were received from the Serbian government informing the EHF that the playing of the matches between Kosovo and Norway on Saturday and Kosovo versus Slovakia on Sunday would not be permitted.

As host and organiser of the event, the Handball Federation of Serbia was asked for confirmation that all of the event’s remaining matches could go ahead and the tournament could be played without further issues.

Having received the answer from the Serbian federation that this was not possible, the EHF reached the difficult decision not to play the remaining matches.

Yeah, because for some weird reason Rhein-Neckar had to play in both the Bundesliga and Champions League on the same day :facepalm:Resulting in having to make choices, and they made the choice to basically send a group of amateur players to Poland, with the 'real' Rhein-Neckar playing against Kiel at this very moment.
