There's an important news for Beach Volley in view of Tokyo 2020!

https://www.oasport.it/2018/02/beach-volley-world-tour-2018-che-novita-i-tornei-cev-saranno-inseriti-nel-world-tour/

The Italian site OASport reports that almost all european CEV beach volley tournaments will be considered as world tour events (1&2 stars): this is important because the World Tour, together with World Championships and Continental Championships is the event used for calculating ranking leading to Olympic qualification.

The site specifies also that FIVB is working to further enlarge the world tour by adding events from other continental cups.

I also want to remember you that, if what was known about beach volleyball olympic qualification will be confirmed, the World Tour 2018 will be used to define a ranking that will give access to 16 couples (1 per nation) the access to an Olympic qualification tournament to be held next year, which will give the first olympic quota for the sport.

What's this strange thing with a group phase where every team only plays 2 of the 3 other teams in the group, like in the Fort Lauderdale major at the moment?

Spoiler

That is absolutely ridiculous! Imagine having a Champions League group in football with FC Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Tottenham Hotspur and AEK Athens, and PSG only has to play AEK and Tottenham, whereas AEK has to play PSG and Barcelona...?!

I like it instead, less matches but more intense

it's the new format for all the main FIVB beach volleyball tournaments...

basically, in each group there are 2 semifinals and then the 3rd place (to determine the only eliminated team after the 1st phase) and 1st place (to determine the team jumping directly to the 1/8 finals) matches...

meanwhile the losers of the 1st place match and the winners of the 3rd place match in each pool must go through to a 1/16 final round...

one thing in favor of this format is that the pool pairings are not done with a pure draw, but they are formed through the teams' position in the FIVB ranking (best against worst in one match, the 2 "mid-ranked" teams in the other match-up)...

still, I hope they won't use this format also at the Olympics...:mumble:

Yeah, me neither. Coming up with semi-finals inside a group phase, that's the next urban thing to make sports more complicated...
