They skate with their names on the suits, that's exposure. They train as a team and function as a team, which is why you often see people from one team all perform good or bad roughly at the same time. The exposure is them skating with the suits of sponsors. 

 

Well, I get that. My interrogation is not sponsors, what are they for ? But why, in one case (speed skating) the sponsors led to the creation of commercial teams, and that in pretty every other cases it didn't (some of them being much more popular sports than speed skating).

Because it worked and everyone thought "hey, this works, let's keep doing it"

Rintje Ritsma, one of the best ever, had enough of skating for the national federation (which didn't exactly provide much of a living) and said goodbye to them in 1995. Eventually he/his manager started the first commercial team (Sanex), which eventually became the famous (in speed skating) TVM team, with the likes of Kramer. TVM stopped a few years ago and the main team now is LottoNL-Jumbo, which I believe was the second commercial team in 1998 (as SpaarSelect).

Would I be right to say that sprinters (especially in the 500m) seem to take the world cup a lot more seriously than especially the long distance skaters?

Hard to say. For example Sven Kramer is sort of injured and I guess there's no reason for him to risk getting hurt more just for a World Cup (which doesn't mean that much considering he's got 9 world allround titles for starters)

I don’t mean this farce of a world cup finale specifically, I mean in general.

Herzog thought she won the 500m, and then, minutes later, the time of Russian Golikova gets changed to a 0,10 seconds (!) faster time all of a sudden resulting in Golikova as winner 

 

Yeah, this fits perfectly in this insane farce of a World Cup final.
