they just wasted years and built up a lot of bad press, haters and controversy (even with the IOC) before doing what should have been done from the beginning :pope:

now the construction work is on, the track in Cortina will be ready even before the more optimist would think: March 2025 the mandatory safety verification, Autumn 2025 an International Training Week and a test race (basically, the same timing of Beijing 2022 and their track) and according to Armin Zoeggeler, it will be a wonderful, demanding track, where a few training runs before the official opening for the International audience would have been very, very useful...and instead all this kind of advantage the Italian sliding sports teams could have had, are gone thanks to the usual Italian way of (recent) life, wasting time behind local useless, senseless protestors and political games that never go to advantage of anybody :wall::bones:

So yeah, yet another big chance thrown away :d

When will countries learn? Once you get the Winter Olympics awarded, the very first step should be finishing the sliding track (if it isn't there already) :p

The track in Cortina has a future but it needs to be used well: apply for a place in the World Cup calendar, to organize World Championships, etc. Encourage other countries to train there. Maybe open the track to tourists for recreational ride during some time: some tracks in Germany do this or La Plagne in France. Cortina has a good location: it`s a well-known resort with a large accommodation and restaurant base. Cesana was a much worse place - the venue for the 2006 Olympic Games in luge and bob sports. There was no infrastructure around there + the area had no tradition in these sports.

Yeah, but what I mean is: the sliding sports are by far the best sports for a home nation to vastly improve their medal chances, so make sure that track is done before anything else, because that will actually improve the medal chances..

In the worst case scenario for us, the conditions will be equal for everyone - something like in Beijing 2022. If the competition were held in Igls, Austria would have a huge advantage.

After four weekends of winter sports, we are slowly entering the middle of the winter season . And, as usual, it's time for statistics that I don't know which theared to put in

IMG_20241101_094143_383.jpg

After 29 events, 20 different NOCs was already on the podium. After several seasons, Uzbekistan is also back on the podium thanks to figure skating (and two former Russians).

This weekend will be all about ice sports, with a total of 13 events: 4 in figure skating (first stage in Europe) and 9 in short track (second stage in Montreal, since SLC was cancelled)

Entering the middle? It doesn't feel like Winter sport season until the second week of November for me :d The middle of the season comes around Wengen and Kitzbuhel.

Doesn’t feel like it for me either, winter started for me back in late September/early October (first event was the Pointsbet Invitational in curling), and ends midway through June (NHL Stanley Cup Finals) :d

For me, it’ll probably be midway throughout the winter season in late January.

Edit: I lied, I also watched the Ice Hockey Olympic Qualifiers in early September.

It depends on what you all follow I think, for me it's more or less the same as for you :d I've had one real weekend of watching winter sports (last weekend, with shorttrack and alpine skiing), the next one with multiple sports is still a few weeks away :p

Wengen, Kitzbühel, indeed, then we're well on the way for real.

my wintersport season starts mid August with the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup and goes through mid June with the Stanley Cup Finals

but the core of course it's only the November through March period, when all the snow & ice sports are in action at 100%, otherwise it's only about hockey

Another week has gone by, and Canada has literally DOMINATED short track, confirming itself as the leading nation for winter victories this season after just over 40 events.

This week we will have curling (2 events, Canada and already underway) and figure skating (4, Japan)

    • There are currently no grounds to consider Ghiotto as a favourite for the 5000. He has never won any important 5000 event while dominating the 10 km at the same time. Roest always won the same pattern, with Ghiotto losing all his advantage in the last 2 laps. We will see what the Italian's form will be like now and how tactically he wants to play it. I would also not forget about Eitrem from Norway, who is much younger from these two and has a lot of room for development.
    • Some good news: Matt Gaetz is out from his position as attorney general, basically two months before he'd even start.
    • Maybe small but this is our worst performance at the European Championships since the post-Covid period and that's a fact. Germany and Norway surprised with their form here. However, only in Italy are things like this possible, such as changing the head coach of the team with less than two years to go before the home games...
    • In my opinion we can lose to Argentina, if it's 0-1 in a moment. This Davis Cup format is a lottery, especially with the shortened doubles. It's no coincidence that all the favorites can/will can be eliminated in the quarter-finals. The second thing is that Argentina has a very solid team: 2 players in the top 30 + a strong doubles. If you sure to will win with them, you would have to have 2 Sinners in great shape.
    • Both Edin and Retornaz at 6-3 just like rank 2 and 3. Just very small margins on h2h and DSC
    • Godun has been training in Italy and Hungary for over 2 years. It's strange that she didn't take a Hungarian passport. Our predecures are so long that it probably wouldn't make sense.
    • Our worst European Men's Championship in this cycle: no promotion to the 1/2. Retronaz has been in poor form since the beginning of the season. The change of the head coach in the Italian team last spring may have had an impact. Unfortunately, the closer to the games, the worse it gets for us and it should be better because we are the organizers.
    • Sport climbing qualification system: https://images.ifsc-climbing.org/ifsc/image/private/t_q_good/prd/a0ga7v4gwmamb3gxouni.pdf
    • Daniel Huber picked up a kee injury during training at Lillehammer.   Piotr Żyła will skip the season opener because of a knee injury too.
    • Agree with you on this. The only missed category was Long Track Speed Skating where Cornelius Kersten and Ellia Smeding have done a good job getting us involved in this event again after many years absence. He won a Bronze medal at 2023 worlds but both are realistically fringe contenders and main goal is to grow the sport here.   As for our general chances by British standards we tend to do well at the various world championships before a Winter Olympics to raise hopes and then several dont quite deliver when its time. Would prefer the reverse to happen where we save our best for 2026 and help boost our Winter sports growth.
