I would very much prefer Schippers winning silver or bronze in an exciting race than Schippers winning gold in a boring race and then cheer just because she happens to have the same flag behind her name as me

But that's the same for almost every athlete, no matter their nationality  

 

I mean, if you have 15 competitions in a year and only one of them is really important, it simply is bloody hard to have your best result in that one competition instead of one of the 14 others

Not really  Ex-Yu athletes can win all 14 competitions prior to the most important one and then flop in it.

 

Of course it's tough, but that's what separates champions from great athletes

I'd find it hard to say Lavillenie is not a champion even though usually he kinda messes up  (ok this year he wasn't the best anyway, but still)
