The team "Ice Hockey Federation of Russia" jerseys unveiled

Following the Court of Arbitration in Sport (CAS) ruling in the case WADA v. RUSADA and with the IIHF being a WADA signatory, changes will be implemented at the venues in the appearance of the ice hockey teams coming from Russia at senior IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships as well as the Olympic Games.

The CAS ruling includes several orders for the two-year period of 17 December 2020 to 16 December 2022 for the participation of teams from Russia including that Russian athletes and support personnel can participate in the beforementioned events under certain requirements including that the uniform worn does not contain the flag or crest of the Russian Federation, the Russian national anthem is not played or sung at any official event venue, and the flag of the Russian Federation (current or historical) may not be displayed at the venue by the organizer, athletes and support staff.

The time period of the CAS ruling includes the men’s and women’s ice hockey tournaments of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games, the 2021 and 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, and the 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship.

The CAS ruling will be implemented as follows at the venues:

  • The team will be called ROC, the abbreviation of the Russian Olympic Committee
  • The ROC emblem with no wording will be used as flag
  • The game jersey may use the existing jersey colours but may not include the flag, crest or other symbols of the Russian Federation but instead the ROC emblem
  • In post-game and medal ceremonies, Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 is played in place of the anthem of the Russian Federation

The game jersey for the upcoming events affected by the CAS ruling will look as in the picture above. A similar jersey is planned for the Olympic ice hockey tournaments in Beijing 2022.

Well, this year is a perfect opportunity to incorporate many young players into the team, allowing them to gain a lot of valuable experience against elite hockey schools. With No worries about relegation, this is the perfect opportunity.

Our team will probably be the youngest team in the history of the world championships this year. the age average is already incredibly low right now before last cutting next Sunday. This can pay off significantly in a few years.

naaaa, we don't have any good youngster to put in the squad...

we need veterans with strong motivation to fight in every game to avoid big scores by our opponents...and this time I'm pretty sure they will give up playing after a period when they are already 5 or 6 goals down, which would result more often than not in humiliating double digit scores even against average opponents (with the risk of a 20+ goal defeat against teams like Russia, Sweden, Canada and so on)...

we don't have a serious youth hockey program, our only hope is IIHF to propose once again to change the rules about team switching and this time accept the offer and try and get some decent resources from the North American leagues (we already did the mistake to refuse that chance in 2006, I hope it won't happen again before 2026)...

There will be definitely no +20 goals defeat :d

You won against France in the preparation, it is an opponent that is not always easy to beat. Plus a world championship match is still a world championship match, so I am not worrying about lack of motivation. Each scored goal and played match at this level is a feast. You have won your maintain in the top division fairly, so I am pretty sure the boys will want to enjoy the tournament and confirm that it was not a fluke.

Well, you know, here in Slovakia, Italy has always been considered as a team of naturalized North Americans. (I will never forget how Rišo Lintner during one WCh, I can not remember which one it was, said that once at lunch when he did not find a place in the Teams hotel canteen, he sat down at a table with players wearing Italian uniforms and was surprised that they communicated with each other only in English during the whole lunch ) That stereotype has changed in recent years and today's Italian team built on its own players is much more sympathetic to our lay public.

well, in the Ninetis and the early 2000's we've been a true North American team, with generally at least 20 out of 23 players coming from USA and/or Canada, even if they all had strong Italian heritage...

then, when most of the european leagues started to have more money to spend and ours lost the only 2 teams that could compete (economically more than technically) with the rest of Europe, things changed dramatically and we necessarily strted to play with more home grown boys (who earlier used to play in our 2nd tier league or in teams regularly stuck on the lower positions of the top tier league ranking)...

maybe we got a bit more sympathetic to other Countries, but surely we went down at least 2 or 3 levels in our performance and frankly we have never been a true top division team anymore...

and unfortunately I don't see how things can improve without going back to the North American material (with the different that nowadays the "Italian" guys are not that connected anymore to our Country, as they are at least the 3rd generation -if not more- born and raised in Canada and/or the USA -moreover, even if the guys from the past used to speak to each other in English, at least they knew the Italian language somehow...the guys of this generation can't even say "ciao" correctly anymore  )...

Jack Capuano was named as head coach of team :USA will be assisted by Nate Leaman and Adam Nightingale.

The 54 years old Capuano is assistant of Ottawa Senators coach and will serve in the USA hockey for 4th time. He already was head coach assistant at 2016 & 2017 World Champonships, in 2005 he coached the USA U18 NT at the 5 Nations Tournament.

Chris Drury is again the GM of USA

and a brief return to :KAZ

After GB, Kazakhstan is the 2nd team to present its final roster for the upcoming WCh. They already named the complete 28 players roster which will fly to Riga.

And there one huge surprise in the Yuri Mikhailis team. :KAZ will have to play without their biggest star Nigel Dawes, the naturalized Canadian of Barys Nur-Sultan former Astana had to refuse the invitation due personal family reason.

The team has 5 naturalized players, 3 :CAN and 2 :SWE , especially their goalie Henrik Karlsson is a monster, a very tall goal tender and very very good. As usual the skeleton of the team is composed by players of the only KAZ KHL team Barys Nur-Sultan, 5 players only play abroad in Russian KHL teams and one in the Russian lower VHL, the rest of the team are from the other local main clubs.

All in all pending on the form of Karlsson, Kazakhstan should have some troubles to avoid last place in its group, the match against Italy should be interesting, without fear of relegation this year this may be a nice open match with free-minded players, this can be a fun game with a lot of goals, in the remaining games there may be a lot of goals too, but I am affraid mostly in their own net.

Sadly it is official, Richard Pánik, Andrej Sekera and Christián Jaroš will not reinforce our team. All three said their NO. :(

In other hand Marián Studenič from New Jersey is confirmed and will arrive next week. Also both fresh :FIN champions with Lukko Rauma Pavol Skalický and Kristián Pospíšil confirmed their participation and will join the team as soon as possible. The team staff is still working on Adam Ružička from Calgary, the response should be known in the next days.

But overall this should be everything, since there no sense to call other NHLers who will eventually lose in the Play-Offs, because of coronavirus measures, they would have to stay 3 days in isolation and then another 3 days without contact with other team mates and only after they would be able to play. I guess any of the teams will not call by these circumstances during the tournament players after Stanley Cup 1st round.
