Winter Olympic Games 2018 Debuting, Coming Back, Returning and Missing Nations

Almost no chance to qualify, but have athlete(s) competing to qualify, but have a small glimmer of hope through reallocation in figure skating:

:SGP Singapore (their female skater is two spots out of reallocation, and if this were 2010 she would qualify as there were 2 reallocations back then).

Two reallocations will be hard to come by though. The only somewhat likely one is Kazakhstan declining their second quota. Their second best skater is injured apparently and it doesn't seem like anyone else could reach the MERs.

What is the Swedish Olympic Committee’s limit for the female skater?

There isn't any. Apparently there are no extra requirements for skaters who are making their Olympic debut.

I guess she’ll be out by a fraction of a point. Unless someone else gets injured. Either way, would be a sad scenario.

Some interesting info:

The PC2018 organizing committee has an internal list of countries that have confirmed participation (granted not all will qualify).

These ones are on the list (even though they are not in any of the above):

:GUA Guatemala

:ASA American Samoa

:HAI Haiti (I forgot this one on my list above)

I wonder what the first two will compete in ? This might be just declaring interest in competing... but their names are in the planning this late. Interesting.

Also not on the list are:
:PUR Puerto Rico

:ALG Algeria

So I doubt they will compete in 2018, similar to how they refused in 2014.

Also not on the list are:

:DOM Dominican Republic

:EGY Egypt

:JOR Jordan

:VIE Vietnam

:INA Indonesia

(Might be because they started the process late).

I emailed both Guatemala and Am. Samoa recently. Guatemala said they wouldn’t compete, American Samoa was targeting bobsled but in 2022/2026. Interesting.

Shame about Algeria too. Though I think they could make 2022 they have a young alpine skier who could improve.

  • 3 weeks later...

Not 100% sure on this but...

Cheyenne Goh of :SGP is into the semifinals (top 23) of the women's 1500m at the Shanghai World Cup. 17th place got 281 points last round. If that is the same case here and Goh isn't disqualified she would up to 24th overall in the 1500m standings (granted all other athlete's points would need to be added, but she likely would still be in the top 36 needed to qualify).

:SGP Goh is ranked 34th (top 36 qualify) overall in the women's 1500m. One more event to go, so cross your fingers!

    • I think the reason is that it's generally preferable to have a fast shooter in the 1st leg, and especially in the prone shooting, where Hofer is quite slow.   Now, I'm not saying I agree with the choice, because I don't. I think it's going to neutralize Giacomel's skiing skills in the 1st lap at least.   I guess the idea is to try and set a very fast pace in the 1st leg, which is usually quite tactical, but I'm afraid that's going to force Giacomel to risk too much because he will feel he has to make some time somehow.   Regardless, Italy must be on the podium tomorrow. I think that would be crucial for the following races as well. I think France is the clear favorite, but the other teams are not stronger than Italy on paper.
