Badminton's a sport I haven't followed, but I just learned that it's one of the sports that the US has never medalled in.  (Surprising, perhaps?)  Looks like our entries have some tough draws today and have either already lost or are the underdogs in an upcoming match.

The :USA has won one world championship title, the men's doubles back in 2005. Won by Howard Bach and Tony Gunawan (who was an Olympic champion for :INA in 2000). Bach and Gunawan were only able to compete in the Olympics as a pair once, in 2012, after Gunawan became a naturalized American citizen.

The Stoevi sisters with another superb performance.  A second 1/4 at a World Championships in their career. Too bad their success has largely been in the background of Bulgarian sport through the years.

Lai from :CAN was down big in the second game against Shi from :CHN...had two match points and was just a couple of centimeters away from winning.  But Shi came back...decider time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-WYFJ7LTnY - tune in for Game 3!

Edit: Lai fought hard, but Shi prevailed.  But congrats for a bronze for :CAN!

    • Shades of 1998 with  and  in the same group but this time it's really a terrible draw for the Thistles. I recall Brazil and Scotland played in the same group in 1974 and 1990 too so that's quite a high probabiliy rate.

    • I think I can live with the draw , not a bad group at all. just a week ago our mafia coach said his dream group is Belgium, Egypt and Haiti, he almost got that !   but it's really hard for me (and so many others) to cheer for this team, A mafia boss coach, disgusting group of players. I never had this feeling about any NT in any sport before but still the national team is the national team. you have to like it  coaches and players come and go, the team is what matters.   if the team makes it to the competition, I'm sure there will be lots of Iranians in the stadium despite the orange's ban, that will never be a problem.
    • Belgium is the luckiest in this story
    • One of the worst possible draw for us. Group really easy but having to face  or  in the Round of 32 is devastating.
