This youngster has a chance, but only if his progression continues until February. As of today, he'd be in 4th or 5th place, alongside the Frenchman, based on his World Cup times in December.

If you're capable of skating 12:35 at this very, very high air pressure, you are at the very least someone with an outside shot, if not more. For those new to the Olympics: it's not like a regular competition, there's insane extra pressure and everything, you simply can not just look at the fastest times of the past 1-2 years and say "well, that's gonna be the result".

12:35 in these conditions is absolutely at least as good, if not better, than for example Semirunniy's 12:28 in a 4-way start.

Nicola Tumolero (!) has Olympic bronze, and so does Ghiotto. Fabris in 2006 certainly wasn't someone you could expect to win a medal. There's no reason to be so unbelievably negative man :d

Fabris was absolutely spot-on in his form for the 2006 Olympics. It was a masterpiece. He's never been in such great shape before or since. Moreover, in the 1500 meters, no one was out of reach at the time. The chances of that happening with Ghiotto are slim, as he peaked one or two years ago, and even a bronze medal would be a failure for him – he already won bronze in 2022, when he was much weaker than he is now.

Given the high air pressure you seriously underestimate just how good especially his time today is. According to the TV pundits, it can be compared to the world record.

He won by 10 seconds over Bergsma and Bosker not a great result for me. In their best races, Ghiotto beat this guys by well over 10 seconds.

Alright.

It was a funny thing that Fabris and speed skating saved the entire Olympics for us in 2006 - without their 2 gold medals it would have been a disaster on home soil... Cross-country skiing also gave a lot, but that was expected, because we were a great power there at the time....

Marrit Fledderus is the tragedy of this year, double false start

Annoying starter, he let everything go the whole time, even when riders were clearly moving, but now he calls it off..

Stefano Donagrandi and Ippolito Sanfratello

Why are you just making up fake Italian names? :P

But once again, I feel like people always underestimate how weird Olympic speed skating results can be. There are always people who find the form of their lives, people who overtrain, people who are randomly in bad form and people who have been hiding their form all season.

    • In my opinion, the maximum period in power should be 8 years. Next to, it's already too long, especially since Hungary's economy is much weaker than earlier. Just as Italy has too many changes of government, Orbán's 16 years in power is definitely too long for me. Perhaps only Erdogan and Putin have ruled in Europe longer, but those are semi-dictatorships.    In the USA, just about two weeks before the election, bookmakers were betting heavily on Trump, from what I remember good. They were more wrong in 2016 with Trump and Clinton – then, Clinton was expected to win clearly until the very end.
    • Fraud hopefully not, it's true that everyone says it will be like 50-50% as far as the winner is concerned. Hopefully the moron (ov) loses but honestly don't know what will happen.  My main concern is that it was said about the 2024 US election that it will be very close and then what happened... (I mean hopefully these opinion polls are more reliable than the American ones)
    • According to our bookmakers, Orban could lose after so long time, but I've read that there may be electoral fraud. What do you think?
    • Good to know there will be a women's hockey wch in Budapest this year. Admittedly I was out of the loop for many sports recently (only followed the winter sports world cup circuit prior to the Olympics and not everything from there even) According to Wikipedia the first day of the competition will be Election Day (12 April) Hopefully this will not be a bad omen for any of the teams involved....
    • This year, Italy will play against Slovakia in the women's hockey World Championships in Budapest in April. Who do you think will be the favorite?
    • Don´t want to speak about Slovak politics amigo. They all were, are and will be greedy, uneducated and corrupted bastards. Point.   Back to sport. We suck as hell, but we know it, However, that´s not a reason to not enjoy the Olympics, it is a once in a 4 years time holiday of sport
    • You are easily in NBC´s medal Tally Top 10 mate. No worries
    • In that time in Poland was ruled by a some center-right government with the support of liberals but a president was a post-communist. It seems to me that in Poland, the president has much more power than in Italy or Slovakia. Btw., during the Yanukovych era, Ukraine also wanted to organize the Winter Olympics in Lviv in 2022
