The first Alpine Cup race was scheduled for tomorrow in Martell.  It is cancelled but the other events in the new year are still scheduled at this time.

Other dates:

FORNI AVOLTRI (ITA) 07.01.21 - 10.01.21 Individual | SPRINT

ARBER (GER) 01/28/21 - 01/31/21 Individual | SUPER SPRINT

POKLJUKA (SLO) 03/18/21 - 03/21/21 Individual | SUPER SINGLE

I think that we will see some interesting names in the smaller/regional races during the Christmas break.  Estonia will host the Baltic Cup for example.  WIth no IBU CUP until later, these races, if they happen, stand a very good chance to see in increase in competitors as well as quality.

Is the IBU still using this season’s Nations Cup standings for Beijing 2022 qualification?

If so, can those rankings be viewed somewhere?

In terms of total quota per nation, I think so. There might also be individual spots again like last time, for a small number of athletes from nations outside of the top-X, which are handed out based on a ranking that's not publicly available (the IBU Qualifying Points List).

Okay, so then the document I have might still be accurate. If it is, allocation works as follows:

1-3 2020/2021 Nations Cup: 6 quotas

4-10 2020/2021 Nations Cup: 5 quotas

11-20 2020/2021 Nations Cup: 4 quotas

IBU Individual Qualifying Points List after the 5th World Cup in 2021/2022: 12 quotas (max of 2 per country to unqualified NOCs)

Reallocation: Next best athlete on the IBU QPL 2021/2022

These were the problems last time. I spent God knows how many hours trying to find this list and even trying to keep it updated myself (because the points per race are always posted after every race, but the total list is a non-published secret even though it's incredibly important once you look outside of the top nations), but all I kept finding was one list from one trimester which happened to be somewhere on Biathlon Canada's website.

One would think an important list, on which - among others - Olympic qualifying depends for a number of athletes, would not be impossible to find. Especially from a federation which generally has a very good results and PDF's system.

So where does this leave biathlon?  The result from today's CAS appeal reduced Russia's ban from 4 to 2 years.  But can they compete in the World Championships?  Can they have a biathlon team in the Olympics?  Quota's are done by nation, and if Russia is not allowed, how do the people qualify?  What about the relay?

    • Apparently this season will be last one in Kamil Stoch career if his results wont be enough good for his standards.
    • Such a nice one for Colturi ! That was fun. It almost looked like a script with the cameras focusing on Colturi a couple of times before her first run and showcasing the potential of youngster and she didn't disappoint.      I hope Colturi skis for Albania forever. So much fun to cheer her with the Albanian flag.    I don't get it why everyone is being so critical of Colturi, you got no right to criticize a personal decision, as most European nations use imported athletes in many sports like wrestling and cheer them on like their.   Would you spend hours criticizing Frank Chamizo for switching to Italy rather than playing for Cuba?

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
