A good chance for a medal in Paris in a sport or an event that your NOC had no olympic medal before.

For :GBR perhaps Toby Roberts in sport climbing. He's currently no.2 in the boulder and lead world rankings and gained a quota at the recent European qualifier by a comfortable margin. He's still only eighteen and improving rapidlly.

It's a bit of a cop out given it's only the sport's second appearance at the OG. Anyway it definitely won't be in artistic swimming, basketball, breaking, rhythmic gymnastics, handball, surfing, table tennis or volleyball which are the other sports in which they've never won a medal.

For :CAN the most likely sports would have to be breaking and 3x3 basketball.

Philip Kim (I refuse to call him Phil Wizard) has won three consecutive World Championships medals (silver in 2021, gold in 2022, silver in 2023) and is the current Pan American Games and Pan American Championships gold medalist.

Our 3x3 basketball team of Michelle Plouffe, Katherine Plouffe, Kacie Bosch, and Paige Crozon has been on a tear the past few seasons. Winning stop after stop on the Women’s Series. Disappointing quarterfinal exit for them at this years FIBA 3X3 World Cup, but we had a tough draw facing France, it could’ve gone either way. 30/34 wins this season for the foursome, 30/33 wins last season (excluding the meaningless 3x3 canada quest tournament and the big 12 tournaments)

If Erin Brooks can get her Canadian citizenship in time to qualify for the Olympics, she could be a medal threat in women’s surfing as well. Silver medalist at the 2023 ISA Worlds, U16 gold medalists at the 2022 ISA Junior Worlds, and widely regarded as the next big surfing star.

A second version of this question - a chance for gold where you had No gold before

Did some research, hadn’t realized that Canada still hasn’t won an Olympic gold in judo. Christa Deguchi and Jessica Klimkait are very easily the top two judoka in the women’s 57kg weightclass.  Klimkait won bronze at Tokyo 2020, but a super disappointing one at that. She was ranked #2 in the world at the time (Deguchi was #1, but of course due to the stupid one athlete per NOC rule she wasn’t competing) and being the reigning World Champion she was coming in as the favourite.

Our best chance for a medal in a sport we didn’t win a medal in before is Rhys McClenaghan in artistic gymnastics. He’s one of the favourites in the men’s pommel.

Golf is also worth a bet as we have chances in both men’s and women’s events.

Small chances for a first medal in road cycling and taekwondo though I wouldn’t be putting my hopes on them either.

For Italy no doubt:indoor volleyball, even men or women.

That's incredibile! One of the best nations in this sport, with 5 world champions wins, Never get a gold. This would be good time

for :ITA it could only be Sport Climbing (Matteo Zurloni, reigning Speed world champion) or Golf (very unlikely, but Le Golf National is the course where all the Italians have their best performances on the tour...Migliozzi did even won that tournament last year -or 2 years ago? :mumble:)

I refuse to take into consideration Breakdance (even if there's a small chance in the women's event)

yeah, for the 1st gold in a sport where we already won some medals, Volleyball (and Beach Volleyball) are the most likely to happen, sooner or later

maybe even Rhythmic Gymnastics

    • Apparently this season will be last one in Kamil Stoch career if his results wont be enough good for his standards.
    • Such a nice one for Colturi ! That was fun. It almost looked like a script with the cameras focusing on Colturi a couple of times before her first run and showcasing the potential of youngster and she didn't disappoint.      I hope Colturi skis for Albania forever. So much fun to cheer her with the Albanian flag.    I don't get it why everyone is being so critical of Colturi, you got no right to criticize a personal decision, as most European nations use imported athletes in many sports like wrestling and cheer them on like their.   Would you spend hours criticizing Frank Chamizo for switching to Italy rather than playing for Cuba?

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
