In the women's team competition Japan lost early to Austria, Canada to Ukraine, USA to Korea. Korea and Ukraine (0 fencers qualified to Paris between the two of them) in semifinal.

In men's competition, #1 Japan knocked out by #16 Singapore, only Italy of the top 4 reaching the semifinal (and by barely surviving to Ukraine and Egypt).

Goes to show how small a field of 8 (or 7+1 in the women's) teams is.

Ukraine just won our first ever WC medal in women's team foil, it's insane

The average age of this team is 21.5 years, which means that they could be threat for next Olympic cycle, such a talented girls

we have to say that many teams are not competing with their best players and/or are not so focused on this final stint of the world cup season

some of them have no motivation for this year anymore, others are already focusing their preparation for the Olympics (and almost every team doesn't have to care about the seeding, because they can't improve or lose places in a significant way)

Epee Grand Prix (:COL Cali)

women's quarterfinals

:ITA Federica Isola vs :EST Nelli Differt

:CHN Chen Chen vs :FRA Auriane Mallo-Breton

:BRA Nathalie Moellhausen vs :EST Erika Kirpu

:ITA Giulia Rizzi vs :ARG Isabel Di Tella

now...try and let Rizzi out of the Olympic team, if you can :bones:

on the other hand, Fiamingo and Isola Today were the best among the other Italians, which might keep the Olympic selection wide open (imho they shouldn't be named in the Olympic team, but it won't be easy to leave Fiamingo out, despite this year's results suggest that)

in the meantime, in the men's event Davide Di Veroli lost again in the early rounds (today it was the last 32, against :POR Frazao)

this is really, really worrying in perspective both for the individual competition and, above all, for the team event, where we must absolutely shut the French up on their Home soil next Summer :p :bones:

Isola and Rizzi are already in the semi-finals :) Looking at the form this year alone, Navarria is probably doing the worst. Fiamingo definitely shouldn't fight in the last match in team tournaments.

    • Ya but the replacement is Pat Bondi, a choice that is only better in so far as Pat Bondi isn't credibly accused of having had sex with multiple underaged girls.   Also, you might recognize this name: Pete Hoekstra has been nominated to be the US ambasador to Canada.
    • Camila Giorgi has a new BF Ramiro Marra. Apparently he's some politician/journalist from Argentina. One of Milei's supporters dare I say? @LDOG@konig

    • 2-1.   But it's good to have a great champion in the squad. I've been waiting for this my whole life. I wish we had such stars in every sport.
    • But he beat Mouat, who seems to be almost unbeatable
    • Argentina has a really solid lineup, especially if they have prepared seriously for this event. Of course they don't have a champion like we do, but in this format it is enough to win 1 match to play the decisive doubles.
    • Today we must to beat Argentina. It looks like Sinner will have to win all the singles and doubles for us to defend the title. So far, the 2nd and 3rd favorites before the tournament have already been eliminated: Esp and USA.
