I agree with the comments on Conlon but not quite on Joshua's final.

Under the current scoring he would definitely have lost 29-28 to the Italian but on 2012 scoring I think he did enough in round 3 to make up the deficit on the 1st two rounds. Although he definitely lost to the Cuban in his first bout in 2012

I actually meant the first fight! Apologies

c'mon, man! the Joshua scandal in London is second only to Roy Jones' in Seoul 1988 in the history of boxing...

and I mean the whole tournament, also the final against Cammarelle, when he should have lost by at least 10 points under the rules of that year...

the other bouts were just the prologue of what they did in the last act of the tournament...

and I'm not biased at all for what concerns that match, not anymore, at least...

it was just the lowest point ever by the "modern" AIBA...

Perhaps, but my perception at the time was that the Italian had done enough over the three rounds to win the gold. It's moot now of course, but I know that is how I felt at the time and I haven't watched the bout since then.

For me Joshua lands 7 or 8 scoring punches in the first 90 seconds of round 3 that wins it for him.

Of course that would mean nothing under the new scoring method.

And I can think of some very bad decisions that went against Italians before that. Mussone and Damiani in 1984 for example

has someone watched the Gadzhimagomedov vs Mouhiidine match?

I just read the result and a few lines by the OA sport website, but I don't trust them at all when it comes to boxing...I haven't watched the bout, so I don't know what to think about it...:mumble:

Re-watching the fight now

Right. I've watched it.

Russian narrowly wins round 1.

Italian wins round 2

Round 3 was messy until the last 30 seconds when the Russian landed some good late punches.

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.

Although the agenda has not been published yet, there shouldn’t be any major items over these two days, apart from the election of a member of the IOC Executive Board. This will be the eighth time the session is held in Italy, the last one being during the Turin 2006 Olympic Games.

    • Weightlifting We now have six events per gender with a total of 10 athletes per event.   The Olympic Qualification Rankings will be based on the sum of the total results of five events (three from period 1 and two from period 2). The top 8 will qualify.   The 9th spot will also be based on the OQR, but it will go to the highest ranked athlete from an unrepresented continent.   The 10th spot will be split between the host and universality (3 each per gender). Should the United States qualify normally then their host quota will be reduced, first going to an athlete from an unrepresented continent then to the overall highest ranked athlete.   Additionally, a "Best Lifter" will be awarded which would give the nation the chance to qualify 4 athletes rather than the max of 3.
