Sprint Canoeing OCA Oceanian Championships 2020

Recommended Posts

This will be the continental qualifier for Oceania. Here are the list of eligible nations in each event. There are other rules, but the simple way to look at it is a nation can only qualify one boat per boat class (men's kayak, men's canoe, women's kayak, women's canoe). Also at least three eligible nations must compete.

Men's K1 200m - :COK:PLW:SAM:TGA

Men's K1 1000m - :COK:NZL:PLW:SAM

Men's K2 1000m - :COK:NZL:SAM:TGA

Men's C1 1000m - :AUS:COK:SAM

Women's K1 200m - :AUS:COK:PLW:SAM

Women's K1 500m - :AUS:COK:PLW:SAM

Women's K2 500m - :AUS:COK:NZL

Women's C1 200m - :AUS:NZL:SAM

Women's C2 500m - :AUS:NZL:SAM

I'm not sure if the three nation rule applies at the start or at the end. If the latter then the women's C1 200m and potentially the women's K1 200m (if New Zealand fails to win the K2 500m quota) will be reallocated.

I'm guessing that Samoa and Cook Islands will get two quotas each. Palau and Tonga will need a lot of luck.

Palau and Tonga will both look for Tripartite spots. Palau got one in 2016, so the ICF would probably favor Tonga here.

Though the Pacific nations haven’t shown much strength, canoe racing is strongly rooted in their culture. Va’a is one of the most anticipated sports at every Pacific Games. Its nice to see more nations thriving to qualify here.

I don't think they will give both Palau and Tonga tripartite quotas, there are only two after all with other places like Belize, Dominica, Malta, Mozambique and North Macedonia all wanting a spot. The men's K1 200m race will be key. Palau also has an option on the women's side which is helpful as the men's side is a bit crowded.

Australia won the women's C2 500 race; however, the results page doesn't clarify is Samoa actually started, was disqualified or any other reason for them not having a registered time, so I'm in doubt if they will be awarded the quota.

Apparently quota places were awarded in all events which started today. That would explain why all qualification contenders are always put together in heat 1. :mumble:

Anyway, quota allocation seems to be as follows...

Men's K1 1000 m - :SAM Samoa

Men's K2 1000 m - :NZL New Zealand

Men's C1 1000 m - :AUS Australia

Women's K1 500 m - :SAM Samoa

Women's K2 500 m - :AUS Australia

Women's C2 500 m - :AUS Australia

Well, technically, New Zealand provisionally qualified in both men's K1 events, but it is a fair assumption (at 99%+) that they will choose a bigger boat.

Either way - Samoa is guaranteed to qualify in either K1 or K2.
