Canada at the 2023 WA World Aquatics Championships

Recommended Posts

Great results in the heats this morning.  Hopefully two more medals on the way tonight, but the relay will be tight.

Angus' time of 1:06.30 is amazing! Probably the best breaststroke split we have seen? If Masse/Oleksiak can return to form next year and Angus keeps this up, we might have a very strong medley relay

If she keeps this up we could also have a shot at medalling in the final. And although we're probably going to secure a quota either way, it would be nice to qualify a relay to Paris 2024 before Doha.

Medley Relays for Finals

Men:

Acevedo -> Dergousoff -> Liendo -> Gaziev

No changes as expected. Hoping to see Acevedo get the OQT but I doubt as he wasn't been able to replicate his performances at Canadian trials. The back half of the team is the biggest strength.

Women:

Masse -> Angus -> MacNeil -> McIntosh :yikes:

So I guess from an upside standpoint, putting McIntosh over an out of shape Ruck and Harvey would be the correct decision. She split 53.33 at the Commonwealth games 15 minutes after doing a 400m freestyle. But her performance on the 4x100m freestyle relay on night one was concerning. Hopefully she just had an off day and she can ride her momentum on what is hopefully a gold medal in the 400 IM.

That's a pretty star-studded womens relay.

Summer now has won more gold medals (4) at world championships than any other Canadian swimmer and she's still 16! Something tells me that number is going to go a lot higher

    • Tentoglou won the men's long jump with 8.22. He only had two valid jumps today.   Another U20NR came in the women's shot put from Maria Rafailidou. She had 16.53 earlier this week and now got 16.59. She's second in the world for U20 this year    So of course Karalis was the big star of our nationals this year, more than Tentoglou, but we also had a lot of teenagers show good signs for the future (Antonatou, Alivizatos, Mitropoulou, Iakovaki, Rafailidou etc).   Antonatou and Alivizatos are both from Kefalonia island. Antonatou's brother is a shot putter who is 19 yo and had a new PB yesterday of 17.92 in the NCAA. I don't remember us ever having any strong athletes from Kefalonia in any sport aside from the late Anna Pollatou who won an Olympic bronze in rhythmic gymnastics. What are they feeding these kids on this island (it only has about 35.000 residents)?! Very impressive.
