Badminton pairs expelled from London 2012 Olympics after 'match-fixing' scandal

All eight badminton players accused of attempting to throw their matches in the women’s doubles on Tuesday night have been disqualified from the London Olympics, Telegraph Sport can disclose.

The eight players from four teams in the women's doubles competition have been thrown out following an inquiry by the Badminton World Federation in London on Wednesday morning.

The expelled players include Chinese World Champions Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang, who were accused by other players of attempting to throw their ‘dead rubber’ in order to avoid playing China’s No 2 ranked pair before the gold-medal match.

The Chinese actions appear to have triggered a response from pairs from South Korea and Indonesia, who in turn tried to lose to subvert the Chinese plan.

Since the announcement, Indonesia and South Korea have announced they will appeal the decision though China have yet to say if they will or not.

The issue is a major embarrassment to the sport and the Olympics, and prompted strong action from the BWF, which has seen a high number of games affected by withdrawals from matches between Chinese players and pairs in the last year.

The WBF met this morning after charging Wang and Yu, Greysia Poli and Meiliana Jauhari of Indonesia and two South Korean pairs, Jung Kyung-eun and Kim Ha-na, and Ha Jung-eun and Kim Min Jung, of not using their “best efforts” to win the matches.

The four pairs were due to meet in quarter-finals on Wednesday afternoon and it remains to be seen how the tournament will be restructured with half the draw now disqualified.

The International Olympic Committee has taken unprecedented steps to tackle match-fixing in the London Games, with president Jacques Rogge describing it as the biggest threat to the integrity of the Games.

There is no suggestion of any betting associated with the matches, but the fact players appeared willing to manipulate results is arguably more corrosive to the reputation of the Games.

Rogge was a spectator at the badminton at Wembley Arena on Tuesday and the developments in the evening session are a a significant embarrassment to the sport and the Games.

The badminton is being played in a round-robin format for the first time in an Olympics, leaving the potential for ‘dead rubbers’ to be manipulated.

South Korea head coach Sung Han-kook admitted his two pairings attempted to throw their matches against the Chinese and Indonesians, but said it was in retaliation against the Chinese team who instigated the situation.

It led to the farcical spectacle of both teams in both matches trying to lose.

The players were jeered and booed by spectators as they apparently deliberately missed, and served out of court.

"The pairs have been charged ... with 'not using one's best efforts to win a match' and 'conducting oneself in a manner that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the sport'," the WBF said in a statement.

Spectators at the Wembley Arena shouted abuse and jeered at the players amid farcical scenes as the teams deliberately sprayed shots and duffed serves into the net to concede points.

"The Chinese sports delegation take the incident in the women's badminton doubles very seriously," a team official told state news agency Xinhua.

"After the delegation's leadership learnt about it, they immediately tasked the relevant people with an investigation. The Chinese Olympic Committee has always advocated the fostering of the Olympic spirit on the playing field as well as the spirit of fair and just competition.

China "opposes any behaviour or acts which contravene this spirit or sports morality for any reason or in any form", the report added.

One thing that would help is a link to the article and something like a date :p I mean, several articles you post are literally years old (one today was more than 7 years old), it would be nice to know which ones are 'news' and which ones are just old stuff :d

Thank you for your good suggestions.

LONDON (Reuters) - The London Olympics badminton tournament was thrown into chaos on Tuesday after opposing teams in two separate women’s doubles matches both appeared determined to lose their final preliminary group matches, prompting organizers to launch a probe.

Spectators at Wembley Arena jeered China’s world champion doubles pair Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli, and South Korean duo Jung Kyung-eun and Kim Ha-na as all four players took turns at missing routine shots to concede points in the match, prompting disquiet from the crowd at Wembley Arena.

A technical delegate told Reuters tournament organizers had formed a review panel to investigate the match and held out the threat of serious sanctions.

Moments after the review was confirmed, the match between South Korea’s Ha Jung-eun and Kim Min-jing and Indonesian pair Greysia Polii and Meiliana Jauhari also descended into farce as the teams played out the same scenario.

A tournament referee came onto the court and appeared to disqualify both pairs of opponents in the second match, but the team’s coaches implored to be allowed another chance.

The match was played out with the referee watching intently for any repeat of the behavior and the South Koreans won 18-21 21-14 21-12.

All teams involved had already qualified for the quarter-finals, though South Korea head coach Sung Han-kook pointed the finger at the Chinese team.

The result of the first match means China’s world champion duo will only meet the country’s number two pair if both teams reach the final.

“The Chinese started this. They did it first,” an ashen-faced Sung told reporters through an interpreter. “It’s a complicated thing with the draws. They didn’t want to meet each other in the semi-final.”

Sung said after the Chinese set the precedent, the South Korean pair in the second match deliberately emulated the Chinese tactic because they did not want to face their team mates in the quarter-finals.

“Because they don’t want to play the semi-final against each other, so we did the same. We didn’t want to play the South Korean team again,” he said.

“They (the BWF) should do something about (the format).”

REVIEW PROMISED

Paisan Rangsikitpho, a technical delegate at the tournament, told Reuters before the second match that there would be a review and held out disqualification from the tournament as a potential maximum punishment.

“We will have a real discussion tonight to see what has happened,” he told Reuters.

“If it’s true what I hear, this is a shame and I don’t like it. And I’m not going to accept anything that I don’t like at all. It’s not in a good spirit.

“It is (embarrassing) at the Games. I apologize to the public, I apologize for everyone and I am not happy.

“If we have to stay up all night, we will have a serious meeting.”

Fans booed as shuttle-cocks were hit long in both matches with serves dumped into the net.

China’s Yu claimed she and her partner were just trying to conserve their strength for the knockout rounds.

“Actually these opponents really were strong. This is the first time we’ve played them and tomorrow it’s the knockout rounds, so we’ve already qualified and we wanted to have more energy for the knockout rounds,” she told Reuters.

“Really, it’s not necessary to go out hard again when the knockout rounds are tomorrow.”

Her South Korean opponents declined to comment.

Other players at the tournament expressed their disdain at the situation.

“If it was the case they wanted to purposefully lose, then it’s a big shame ... It’s absolutely stupid and shameful sport, basically,” said Germany’s men’s singles player Marc Zwiebler.

“I can understand the motives but that they have the guts to actually stand in a crowded hall and put such shame in the game, it’s such a bad image of badminton.”

Match fixing at its highest level again. Match fixing never stops in China. This time now even in Basel World Championship also got match fixing. Seems like BWF is blind and keeps on letting this happen again and again among China players. I find it so shocking.

  1. 绯闻,这个不展开,毕竟20年过去了,有的当事人都是快抱孙子的年纪了,总之这是坊间流传甚广的一种说法;

让球事件4年后,同样的奥运会半决赛,张宁和周密的一场内战中,周蜜让了球,据说周蜜是在第一局间歇获得的指示;

让球事件8年后,与叶龚两人差不多年纪(小叶钊颖一岁,大龚智超两岁),当初被两人逼着只能去女双混碗饭吃的张宁在北京完成了前无古人的奥运女单卫冕,而半决赛和队友全力相拼的卢兰在铜牌战中不敌尤里安蒂,当时有人撰文对比两次,认为卢兰该让球;

就如12年的那次,如果大家正常去打,于洋很有可能以比肩葛菲顾俊的殿堂级选手身份退役,而不是咬牙坚持四年后,却在里约摆烂的那幅样子;

赵云蕾应该还是混双全满贯,没了女双的包袱说不定跟田卿也没有后面的故事;

松糕组合在16年亚锦赛亲手扼杀了队友进入奥运的希望;

日本女双连续两届世锦赛决赛内战都打到了3局加分,几乎耗干了选手最后一滴汗水;

本届世锦赛,保木卓朗/小林优吾和队友狭路相逢,二话不说真刀真枪的干了三局;

还有亨德拉在半决赛和队友后辈打得激情澎湃,得一分吼一下,完全不像尊“冷面佛”;

Latest news revealed that China junior players have all falsified their age to make themselves look 5 years younger than their actual news so they can be eligible to play in AJC and WJC. All the different China players are involved in this age cheating. Zhou Meng who is listed down as born in year 2001 is actually born in year 1997. Amazing. This things keeps on happening yearly in China yet BWF is forever blind and takes no action.

An x-ray analysis of the bones of competitors in the Youth Games in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong discovered that 3,000 of the 15,000 athletes, or 20 per cent, had misrepresented their age.

Two thousand of them were too old to be eligible for youth competition, while one offender was seven years older than he claimed.

Suspicions of age-faking have dogged Chinese sport and caused embarrassment for China during last year's Olympic Games in Beijing. He Kexin, a gold medal-winning gymnast was investigated by the International Olympic Committee after being accused of being only 14 years old and ineligible.

Although Miss He was eventually cleared by the IOC, suspicions linger on and Bruno Grandi, the president of the International Gymnastics Federation recently gave an interview to the German press in which he said that there was "strong circumstantial evidence" of age falsification by the Chinese.

Guangdong is hosting the Asian Games in its capital city of Guangzhou next year, and the local Communist Party is determined that there will be no outcry. "We want to make sure fakers have no advantage," Ye Xiquan, the deputy head of the sports bureau in Guangzhou, told a local newspaper.

All athletes who entered this year's Provincial Games were tested, as were the top eight in each category from last year. Mr Ye said faking was so widespread that up to 16 competitors in a single event had cheated.

Xinhua, the state news agency, said the structure of the Chinese sports system, where money follows success, encouraged local coaches to use older, and physically more capable, athletes in order to win more medals. "Really good fakers can take part in all sorts of events: those for young athletes, those for university students and even those for the disabled."

Rampant cheating at Chinese games exposed

The Chinese desire to win at all costs has created a culture of rampant cheating among athletes, including one team of men who donned wigs to compete in a female dragon boat race, according to a report by sports officials.

Chinese athletes, spurred on in some cases by the State sports system, have an unfortunate reputation for winning at any cost.

Last year, at least 30 runners in Fujian welshed their way into the top 100 of the province's International Marathon by hopping onto public transport or by hiring ringers to stand in for them.

Meanwhile, the Beijing Olympics in 2008 saw questionable judging in the shooting, gymnastics and boxing competitions and allegations that China had fielded under age gymnasts.

The latest controversies came in the south western province of Yunnan after officials detailed some of the cases they had uncovered in recent years.

The report said 110 athletes had faked their ages at the annual Provincial Games in 2010, many of them swimmers.

Meanwhile, partial judging at a youth diving competition in August saw some divers given zero points by a panel of judges which included the captain and coach of rival teams.

One former provincial diving coach, Hei Licang, admitted that he had been told by a "relative of a sports official" to "look after" a certain athlete. He said he had subsequently been ticked off when the diver did not take gold.

In perhaps the most far-fetched example of cheating, however, a male team at the 2006 Ethnic Minority Games put on wigs to try to win the female dragon boat racing competition.

Winning a gold medal at a large provincial sporting event often translates into financial reward for athletes and their coaches, including better housing and a good job after retirement.

"The report shows how determined we are to stop people manipulating the medal table," said Liu Xiang, a spokesman for the Yunnan Sports Bureau. "And we managed to catch the men in wigs before they competed".

"We have done a lot of work in the past two years, but I cannot comment on why these athletes cheat. I am not involved in the economic side of the games," he added.

    • Italy will boycott the Azeri stage for protest against the international federation.
    • Likely for Tannheimer, quite unlikely for Galmace Paulin. She's far from being assured to even start in the WC before turning 20. Basically she'd have to get a spot this season, which could actually happen if she takes the extra-ticket at the JWCH. Anyway I don't see her making her way to gold in Oslo. Tänglander has a few seasons to do it, we'll see.       Quite surprisingly so, indeed. Barring her horrendous finish Richard would have made it 2 in one go. We should have some more names in the list in 2025.
    • There are some of Slovakia's finest young squads at the World Juniors in recent years
    • Alpine skiing also we have a lot of problems: the men's team is very weak and has been winning a few podiums a season for several years and the our best skier- Dominik Paris is 35. We still have a strong women's team but 3 of the 4 leaders are over 30 (Goggia, Brignone, Curtoni) and Bassino is 28. Another 2 years and we will have the same problem as the men's. There is basically no cross-country skiing without Pellegrino for many years, biathlon is based on 2 individuals with one of them has a 35 years. Vittozzi's injury was enough and we haven`t a single podium this season after 3 stages of the World Cup. As for 1 year to the home games the situation isn`t optimistic.
    • Hail to the Reds... Commanders. First time since 1991 Washington QB has thrown 5 TD passes in a game (which isn't all that improbable in the modern game alas Dan Snyder...)

    • Thanks, great stat! Tannheimer wont turn 20 until August 2025, so she has The whole Season To Join Kristiansen and Neuner. Too Bad that she was ill this week. I think Galmace Paulin and Tänglander could also do it. I think Grotian (born 2004) is The First female Biathlete born after 1999 To make a World Cup Podium. On The Mens side multiple Athletes (Perrot, Giacomel, Uldal) have already done it.   E. Öberg was 22 and a half when she First won.  Dahlmeier was 21 and a half.   Edit: Grotian only narrowly missed The Podium in The Individual at The 2024 World Championships when she was still  19 year old.
