Open Qualifier took place today for women, with 28 girls advancing to quaterfinals.

I got surprise when I didn't see neither Misugu Okamoto :JPN, Brighton Zeuner :USA and Lizzie Armanto :FIN on the start list. This discipline stayed in a "Stand-by" situation since Tokyo. The first event should have happened in Brazil, last year. For some problems between World Skate and Brazilian Federation, both events were postponed.

So, because of it, I don't have info about their absence. I think that Armanto retired, she is 30, so that's my guess. Brighton will compete in a Red Bull event in Miami during the championship. Why? No idea. Misugu is the only that I really don't have any idea why she is not participating.

Coming back to the girls on the event, it's clear the dominance of :BRA:USA:AUS and :JPN. Brazil qualified 5 girls, Australia 2, USA 9 and Japan 4, it means twenty athletes from only 4 countries. :AUS and :JPN also have one and two girls who received bye for this phase, improving the number to 23 among 32.

Also, because of this gap of competitions, there are a plenty of new names, among all countries. Highlights to :GBR:GER:FRA:CAN:KOR and especially :ESP which took a incredible third position with Naia Laso

The women's park finals will have three athletes from :JPN :USA and two from :GBR . I'd like to hope the men's final will be a bit more diverse, but the semis only have :FRA :ITA :PUR in a sea of :AUS :BRA :USA

I am very disappointed about Brazilian performance on women's side. I was expecting an evolution from our girls, but looks we will have to wait a little bit more. This was the only event that we didn't win a medal in Tokyo.

Also, Australia could have achieved more from this tournament.

As for the men's side, I just missed :USA Zion Wright, an Olympic skateboarder, and Luiz Francisco :BRA who went undersurgery and couldnt compete.

The rest of the best were there. Clearly, USA, Brazil and Australia are dominating this event and discipline. :JPN, for some reason, doesn't have good athletes on the men's competition.

I'd like to highlight the improvement from some athletes out of these big three. Glifberg :DEN is still in contender, I wouldnt bet in him to keep fighting for an Olympic spot. :NOR has also improved his participation with Nilsen.

:ITA has a good team too. :FRA and :PUR have their representant as well.

Eaton got a 93.00 is a joke. A pity, because Akio had an incredible championship. Anyway, we are used to being robbed.

Still silver and bronze is a great result.

    • I won't write about injuries (Fede) and non-sporting matters (Colturi), but the fact is that Italy has its worst start to the season in alpine skiing in over 10 years... Just one victory, and podiums- if any, they're mostly 3 places. We're also not leading in any of the season standings, no in the women's or men's categories. This isn't be it should be in an Olympic year in your country, where you're having your worst season in many years.
    • Plaisier blew 3 match darts and Ratajski comes back to win!
    • Yes, she was unlucky, but it could just as easily have happened during some training, like with Gut, etc. Brignone has been essentially injury-free throughout her long career, which is very rare in this sport. It's unfortunate that this happened after her best season ever and just 1 year before the Olympic Games in home, when she just missing of win the Olympic gold medal in her great career. With the gold in Cortina, she would have become a legend of Italian skiing, on par with Tomba. Now she's still the best Italian woman in history, but the miss of Olympic gold will likely haunt her for the rest of her life.
    • It sad to see this season, as I remember, that Fede last year was winning everywhere, when she competed and finished and now we haven't even managed a single podium in the giant slalom, and it'll probably stay that way until the end of the season. Without Fede and Bassino, unfortunately, we're out of good cards in this event. For me Goggia should probably skip the giant slalom at all, becouse she has no chance of a podium and she risks further injuries. If even Goggia finish 8th or 10th? What difference does it make? If she couldn't get a podium finish today with so many DNFs at the top skiers, she probably never do. Della Mea is OK this year, but let's be honest, she's not World Cup podium material. Overall, it's a sad picture, and we have a 0% chance of anything in Cortina unless a miracle happens in Brignone return.   We have two chances for Goggia in DH and SG + maybe a dark horse in Pirovano/Curtoni in SG. That's all. In technical events, we have a 0% chance for medal and that's sad. Our federation also lost Colturi in this situation... In any normal country, the head of such a federation should be dismissed for disciplinary reasons and this case should be investigated by the minister, or even the prime minister, but not in Italy...
    • Mikaela Shiffrin  off the podium today (Edit: Oops...I thought this was slalom, not Giant Slalom.).  Nina Astner  entered the 2nd run in 30th place, but had the best second run, jumping up 18 places to 12th.
    • Maryna Gąsienica-Daniel with a 5th place PB in Semmering GS!
    • Today RDC will defeat Senegal  and Tunisia 0-0 Nigeria
