Cross-Country Skiing 2019 - 2020 Discussion Thread

There's a first ever Dominican Republic cross-country skier in FIS' database :d

https://www.fis-ski.com/DB/general/athlete-biography.html?sectorcode=CC&competitorid=239595

"Sure, she's in the database but won't compete probably."

Wrong, she's in São Carlos at this very moment, where next week there will be FIS rollerski races (part of the Brazilian rollerski circuit), most likely she'll make her debut there :) I'm definitely gonna try and get some more info as soon as possible (in a few days), I'm curious now :p

Edit: Apparently she comes from inline skating :)

377 FIS points for Placencia :DOM in her distance debut today (which could have been better if Taynara Silva didn't have to withdraw injured), that's very promising in terms of qualifying for the 2022 Olympics :cheer:

For those interested, the South American program this month, all in Ushuaia (Argentina). FIS says the first ones are in Tierra Mayor but that is literally the exact same track, probably the Brazilian federation was just a bit more specific for their national championships than Argentina was for their races :p

- 08/08: Sprint Skating 1.2km (Brazilian Championships)

- 09/08: Sprint Classic 1.2km

- 10/08: Distance 5km/10km Skating (Brazilian Championships)

- 13/08: Sprint Classic 1.4km (South American Championships)

- 14/08: Distance 5km/10km Classic

- 15/08: Distance 5km/10km Skating (South American Championships)

- 18/08: 50km Ushuaia Loppet Classic*

* A certain Totallympian's girlfriend will make her official 50k debut there :d Which should go well, she had a 100km rollerski training here and next year we're planning a 150km one... :p The 100km made her convinced she wants to one day try the Vasaloppet :d

So in Thailand there was a 200m rollerskiing race and one of the women's participants just (really) barely managed to get under four minutes..

https://www.fis-ski.com/DB/general/results.html?sectorcode=CC&raceid=34387

I can in all honesty say I can rollerski 200m within four minutes, even if I fall, and having had not more than an hour of practice..

Great, tomorrow the Brazilian championships start in Ushuaia. A certain athlete had three pairs of competition ski's eight months ago, which is not much, but fine.

- One pair got lost somehow during the biathlon season, and was promised to be replaced, but hasn't been

- Another pair mysteriously got lost from the place they're staying in Livigno (Italy)

Meaning only one pair could be sent to South America for a month of competitions......and that one has not been waxed after the last race (in January), which someone was supposed to do and was paid to do...for those who don't know: leaving ski's like that unwaxed for half a year makes them utterly useless, meaning she's pretty much lost all of her competition ski's in a little over half a year and she'll have to compete on half-broken training ski's.

Ugh, I thought not much more could go wrong and/or unfair...

Is there any way skis could be sent for her? Is it looking like the other skis will be found?

The first lost pair is considered lost and she's been waiting for a replacement pair for 8 months now. The second lost pair is something she just got to know a week or so ago when arriving in Argentina and so being 'reunited' with her snow equipment.

Races start tomorrow, so there's not gonna be enough time for new skis to be sent (and even if there was, I've got a feeling any attempt to get that done is gonna result in 'Nah this is fine' and a whole ton of nonsense arguments as answer). To illustrate: she's been competing on old, broken boots for years now because she's simply refused now ones even though national federation contracts and documents simply state she has the right to get new ones. Same thing for other kinds of equipment.

It is so badly time to get the hell out of there and try and train in another country. Maybe some national-level (so not World Cup-level of course) program in Germany or whatever. Overcoming years of frustration and unfair treatment and ending up at the 2022 Olympics would be worth a gold medal on it's own right.

    • keeps its perfect qualification record in women's curling    definitively gave them a lot of gifts today. For their sake hopefully they can draw better against the  tomorow.
    • Obviously impossible to know in advance but in 2022 all ten skaters Canada qualfiied skated individually, and 9/10 competed in a relay as well.
    • 4-3  over  at the break, Norway with hammer.
    • whatever you heard is just speculation. no one knows at the moment, probably even the orange himself.   and Iranian athletes failed to get visa so many times before. even female athletes. there is no pattern, it's just too random.    and yes Iran has a system of compulsory military service for men, and there is 50% chance for anybody to be randomly drafted by IRGC affiliated organizations. that's the case for Taremi and few others in the current team.
    • Would you believe the NCAA Indoor season has already started?
    • Some changes that I've noticed:   3x3 Basketball: With the expanded 12 team field, one extra team per gender qualifies through world rankings, one extra team qualifies through the universality driven tournament and there's now an Olympic Qualifier series to award the final quotas.   Beach Volleyball: Continental qualifiers have have priority over the World championship and World Rankings quotas and there's now Olympic Qualifier Series quotas.   Canoe Sprint: World ranking system now in place and will be used instead of awarding world championship quotas. Road Cycling: 2 nations ranking quotas per gender moved to universality.   Track Cycling: Sprint and Keirin ranking list is now combined and will award 14 quotas per gender. Previously it was 7+7. Team pursuit down to 8 quotas from 10. 2 of the quotas have been moved to madison (one additional team) and 6 to the omnium.   Fencing: Can get a Continental quota of you finished in the top 24 of the rankings. It was previously top 16.    Hockey: 2 pro league quotas replace two qualification tournament quotas.   Judo: 5 less universality places and 4 more Continental places. For men, there's two more spots for Asia, one less for Oceania and 1 more for the Americas. For the women, there's one more spot for Europe, one less for Oceania and two more for Asia.   Modern Pentathlon: Less quotas awarded through world rankings as a result of quota cuts.   Open Water Swimming: Introduction of world ranking qualifier.   Sailing: In general, seems to be more quotas awarded at the last chance regatta and less quotas at the World Championships   Shooting: One less quota handed out at each World Championship and the return on World Cup qualifiers.   Swimming: Olympic qualification and consideration times renamed to A and B standard. B standard is now 1% slower than the A standard compared to 0.5% in 2024. Stroke 50s have their own direct qualification events and have minimum time standards instead of A and B standards. Qualification times have been nuked again. B standard selection process has also changed.   Volleyball: New revised format. Continental championships first, then world championships followed by world rankings. In 2024, it was 3 qualification tournaments and then world rankings. Only 3 countries per gender will qualify by world rankings now compared to 5 in 2024
    • For Italy, the match against Japan and likely the final match against Estonia will be a safe/relegation game, but I'm think that whether the match against Estonia will be decisive on anything, if we have 0 points after 4 matches. We're currently the worst team here – we have 0 points and are taking significantly fewer shots than our opponents in each match. Japan and Estonia are looking better for now and unfortunately, without significant improvement play starting tomorrow, we'll likely be relegated to the fourth division. With the absence of Russia and Belarus, this will be a shame, even for the weaker 2006/2007 age generation. Especially, since we are playing this tournament at home. For anyone could have competed with a good shape, except perhaps Hungary, who are currently the best team in the tournament.
