So after a long hiatus, World Aquatics has rebranded it's top competition in this discipline, to be held over 3 stages.

The first one is taking place at Xi'an starting minutes from now, and until Sunday, with a rather small, but packed with quality field.

Of course, China will again demonstrate why it's the powerhouse, with Great Britain still ahead of the other contenders.

Some chance for medals for Italy and Germany, maybe even Ukraine and Brazil could sneak in.

An interesting development - especially as we missed the 10m synchro quota. I wonder if he will look to team up with Matty Lee again or whether he will just look to secure the 2nd individual quota.

:GBR British Diving Cup :GBR

This week Edinburgh has been hosting the Scottish National Diving Championships/British Diving Cup. This is the key selection event for the 2024 World Championships and saw the competitive return of Tom Daley.

Men's 10m Synchro

Tom Daley & Noah Williams: 422.46. Score is marginally higher than that achieved by Williams/Lee in the final at Fukuoka. The score was depressed a bit by a poor back 3 1/2 somersaults in pike which only scored 55. Looks like this will be the pairing going to Doha in the only synchro event where GB don't have a quota secured.

Women's 10m Synchro

Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix & Lois Toulson: 317.10. Score is about 7 points higher than they achieved when they took silver in the final at Fukuoka.

Men's 3m Synchro

Jack Laugher & Anthony Harding: 437.88. Score is up by around 13 points on their score from Fukuoka. This kind of score would certainly put them in the mix for silver/bronze at any international competition.

:JAM Yona Knight-Wisdom & Yohan Eskrick-Parkinson scored 351.69. Good to see the smaller nations progressing in the sport - this is 10 points more than they managed in Fukuoka and would probably put them in the mix to qualify for the final.

Women's 3m Synchro

Scarlett Mew Jensen & Yasmin Harper: 284.34. The only synchro team who weren't able to match their score from Fukuoka. This is a drop of about 12 points and would not have been enough for them to medal.

We've also had the preliminary round of the men's individual 3m springboard:

1.) Jack Laugher - 469.85

2.) Ross Haslam - 455.30

3.) Jordan Houlden - 411.10

4.) Daniel Goodfellow - 385.40

5.) Leon Baker - 366.50

:IRL Jake Passmore scored 361.45, :JAM Yona Knight-Wisdom scored 358 - both outscoring their 2023 World Champs performance.

:GBR British Diving Cup :GBR

Men's Individual 3m Springboard

1.) Daniel Goodfellow - 476.00

2.) Jack Laugher - 474.55

3.) Jordan Houlden - 470.30

Goodfellow's score is about 40 points higher than he achieved in the final at Fukuoka but wouldn't be enough to trouble the podium. Laugher's Inward 3 1/2 somersaults in tuck let him down a bit and overall his numbers were a bit lower than we're used to seeing but he does seem to be back from his injury problems.

Given the ridiculous nature of the 2024 season, presumably even the unlucky few (I'm thinking of men's 3 m in particular) must have a shout for the Europeans, and therefore a point to their season

The GB selection policy for the Worlds in Doha is prioritising the Men's 10m synchro - that's now pretty sure to be Daley/Williams - and both the Men's and Women's Individual 3m Springboard. Given Goodfellow has already secured a quota, I'd expect both Laugher and Houlden to make the trip for the men's event.

Definitely think the Olympic team is pretty much already decided (barring any major injuries) but as you say, with a packed schedule for 2024, there should be enough competition for everyone in the elite squad to have at least 1 international competition.

    • Unfortunate, but it doesn't change the fact that I'm looking forward to Thursday evening, when the team captain's meeting is over and we have our very first World Cup start list of the season. Always a cool moment to see who's there and everything
    • Today I unpacked some of the boxes in which we have put my way too many books to move to our house, and I came across these beauty's I hadn't seen for a while     Absolutely recommended, tough to get for a decent price, but they are such an interesting read with lots of very interesting little stories! Still looking for at least 1900, 1904 and 1906, but not really in the right moment to spend money on that now, so the wait goes on
    • Which I guess is part of why unfortunately 'our' first wild card attempt of the season was rejected last week
    • The next chapter in the Krasnobaeva saga is upon us.   Looks like  Armenia have cut ties with her after only a few weeks. A person from their Federation has said, that they won't continue the relationship, because of her unprofessional and rude attitude towards the coaches and other officials. That includes: - having no respect to the coaches and their advise; - training without any motivation; - stops doing the routine and throws objects without any reason; - just lays on the floor and ignores the music.   When this was escalated with her mother, she mentioned that "Elvira has a strong temper and she was the same in Bulgaria and they tolerated her". Which of course is complete BS. If anyone attempted this shit here, they would be thrown out immediately.   And now  are wanting from her mother to return all finances they gave them, which she is refusing, so they will probably sue them. They will also inform other RG Federations about this situation, so they don't hire them.   My 2 cents on this is most likely Krasnobaeva was happy in BG and was forced out by her mother, so now she is sabotaging the move and be done with it.
    • Honestly Ruka is my favourite World Cup event of the whole season. Everybody is there. Later on there is always someone who skips one weekend or another . Not everybody takes part in Tour de ski. But here everyone shows up.
