Sprint Canoeing Qualification for Summer Olympic Games 2016

Recommended Posts

Quick question:

If for some reason a spot becomes available in the men's c1 1000 (for ex. Brazil uses only 2 athlete quotas across the 3 it has), does that mean the spot is reallocated to the 9th place boat in the men's c1 1000 (Mark Oldershaw - CAN). If so what happens to the continental quota he earned? Would it be reallocated to Canada regardless? I ask because if Oldershaw got the quota from the worlds, he would not have competed at the continental qualifiers, meaning Canada would have won a quota in the c1 200m. What a mess!

Palau got a wild card

Nice for Palau! I would assume the quota went to Marina Toribiong, pretty much their only athlete (in women's K1).

But it also looks like Cook Islands didn't win a quota in C1 200.

Canada qualified in the women's K4 500 m? How did it happen?

They qualified 4 athletes across other events. Rules in canoe sprint allow any kind of a combination (in men's kayak, men's canoe and women's kayak), as long as you have enough athletes to do so.

Apparently, Romanian C2 crew tested positive for doping at the European qualifications. Moldova receives the quota now. Confirmed by Moldovan NOC.

Correction: it DIDN'T test positive at European qualifications; it was tested positive at a domestic (Romanian) routine control...and yes, the culprit is the fukin Meldonium. Anyhow, a press release of the Romanian Anti-Drug Agency, issued this week, said that the 2 canoeists had only the smallest concentration of Meldonium in their blood, which means they took it before 1 January 2016. In this case, Carp and Strat should be considered innocent and their quota places restored.

If the lights light up exactly at the correct moment, he was definitely first, since his light went on first. Not sure if those lights are 100% accurate though?

Romanian NOC published today a press release on their facebook page, stating that Leonid Carp and Stefan Strat (C2-1000 m) are considered innocent and their ban will be lifted, thus they will go to Rio. I still wonder if that is possible...
