Women's Handball EHF European Championship 2020

Recommended Posts

Since less than a month before the start of the EHF published the list of players:

https://women2020.ehf-euro.com/fileadmin/Content/WOMEN2020/Official_Squad_List_W2020.pdf

Each squad list includes up to 35 players.

On the French side, I want to point out that Mano nHouette will not be involved due to injury but there will be a big comeback from Dancette and Prouvensier.

It's highly possible that Denmark will host this event alone due to covid restrictions in Norway. According Norwegian rules if one player will be infected the entire team have to be quarantined, including opponent team if a team will play a match during tournament.

The Norwegian Handball Federation has informed EHF that they will not be able to host Women's EURO which begin in just 17 days.

"Alternatives are being sought with the Danish Handball Association and additional information will be released on Tuesday at the latest" - EHF

A coward move by Norway and so close to the event. As if they didn't know the situation months ago... They shouldn't be allowed to host events for decade+ for this.

It's not that the Norwegian federation haven't tried. They've tried getting an exception from the rules mentioned by Rybak, but got no answer and it would in no way be fair to be having different rules for half the teams. They've really done a lot to find a solution, but to no avail. Sure they could have made the decision earlier (it was mentioned first that it could indeed end this way about a month ago), but I would in no way call this a coward move and given the circumstances it's really hard to make the right decisions.

Don't get me wrong. People from Danish handball are pretty pissed as well as the championships are indeed in danger (it would be hard enough making the economics work out for a single host with plenty of spectators able to go) and it's putting us in a tough spot with very little time.

I understand it is mostly a government decision and that the federation could do only so much. But still, it is a bad look for a country, that has a very good reputation in organizing big level sporting events, that they couldn't manage this situation. And it's not such a dire Covid situation in Norway like it is in other places. I am finding it hard to believe what the big issue is, other than the officials there not wanting to bother with all the logistics and measures. For a rich a$s country like them, setting up a bubble in 1 city, for 8 teams, should be a walk in the park...

I wonder, if it's going to be a same thing with the upcoming ski-jumping and cross-country events in December and what will happen to them?

Let's hope they can find another host. Germany, Netherlands, Poland could host with ease.

Just because a country is rich it doesn't mean that they should spend their money on a sport event in the middle of a pandemic. It's kinda low on the list of priorities right now. This situation is a bad look for EHF who didn't call the whole thing off the moment the second wave started in Europe.

    • It’s honestly baffling how bad she was in 2018. Just absolutely lost her head. Real shame too because she is so gifted. I do hope Li Jianrou sends her a Christmas card every year tho, she was absolutely gifted a gold medal by Christie in 2014.
    • Oh I’m not done yet, unfortunately. From the names that could be back but are still injured   Courtney Hoffos Mikael Kingsbury (should be back before the Olympics) Connor Howe (he returned, but nowhere close to his best so his injury is still giving him issues) Connor Bedard Meryeta O’Dine Megan Oldham
