Yeah, if I'm not mistaken ranking finals are just sort of a more extended version of the 'A-final/B-final' kind of system to determine lower positions :p

Wow, this track looks really poor...it sort of reminds me like the European Youth Olympic Festival in Erzurum, for which it'd be fine, but for a world championships..?

Anna Seidel drives a Chinese down to the ice in the 1500m QF's. Result: Chinese gets a penalty, Seidel (who also fell) is advanced

yeah, it looks like the Barclays Center in New York...

it's a building not originally projected to host an ice rink, which then has been put in place by removing a lot of "normal" seats...

and in this case you can also clearly see that the ice surface is not frozen on an appropriate platform, at least not a good one in terms of "choreography" and that has a really awful look, both for the spectators on site and for those in front of their TV/PC screen...:wall:

    • I think the reason is that it's generally preferable to have a fast shooter in the 1st leg, and especially in the prone shooting, where Hofer is quite slow.   Now, I'm not saying I agree with the choice, because I don't. I think it's going to neutralize Giacomel's skiing skills in the 1st lap at least.   I guess the idea is to try and set a very fast pace in the 1st leg, which is usually quite tactical, but I'm afraid that's going to force Giacomel to risk too much because he will feel he has to make some time somehow.   Regardless, Italy must be on the podium tomorrow. I think that would be crucial for the following races as well. I think France is the clear favorite, but the other teams are not stronger than Italy on paper.
