For the women' s event :FRA :PER :POR :USA advanced to round 6 and like the men will not finish any lower than 6th. :AUS :CAN :POR :USA have been placed into the repechage, starting in round 8.

In the men's event, after repechage round 9, :BRA :BRA :INA :INA advance to the next round while :BAR :JPN are eliminated and finish joint 11th.

 

Big loss to Japan as their chances to finish atop the men's team points rankings have taken a hit.

In the women's event, after repechage round 7, :AUS :AUS :BAR :GER advance to the next round while :FRA :ESP finish joint 15th and :CRC :FRA finish joint 13th.

 

Not a good round for France, losing 2/3 surfers. Australia remains as the only nation with three surfers.

In the men's event, after repechage 10, :AUS :INA :INA :USA advance to the next round while :BRA :BRA are eliminated finish joint 9th.

 

We now have 8 surfers remaining for the final day. Along with the above repechage winners we also have :JPN :PER :POR :USA

Yeah, :USA is the big favourite for the Olympic quota. Should one of their surfers win the event, they automatically qualify. They are also guaranteed the quota should they finish second and fourth with their two surfers (it's less strict if :JPN doesn't win or :INA doesn't finish 1st and 3rd with its two surfers). 

 

As mentioned before :PER is mathematically eliminated while :AUS and :POR need favourable results (mostly, :USA losing both athletes early).

We now have 8 surfers remaining going into the final day. Along with the four above we also have :FRA :PER :POR :USA

The fight for the Olympic quota for the women's event will be interesting. :AUS and :POR both have two surfers remaining and can win the quota without winning the overall event. If :FRA or :USA wins, :POR would need a 2nd and 4th while :AUS needs a 2nd and 7th (or better) to win the quota. :GER only chance at winning would be if :PER also finished in second (Peru has no chance at winning the quota).

      Canada played well here in the league phase, but these new rules, in my opinion, are more of a lottery and it is easier for an unpleasant surprise to happen to the favorite, although of course Canada has always been better in women's water polo, just like the USA. In Italy, I'm worried about the decline of the our women team and now that Russia returns, we might have a serious problem to qualifying for the Olympics, even with 12 teams. It's a tragedy. I know that young girls in the ITA prefer swimming in these times, but our swimming federation should try harder to promote water polo among young girls. Apparently, they have excellent finances, so let them keep doing anything. After all, not everyone has to swim in a 50-meter pool. For now, in my opinion, in women's water polo for Italy, naturalizing 1-2 strong girls, e.g. in the centre, would help a lot, but our federation is stil sleepingWhat good naturalization means was shown to us by the Italian NT in women's hockey and in water polo 1-2 such strong girls would be enough...

      At this point Brazil is the favourite to take the Olympic quota. They were unfortunate in their draws during the league stage. Based on their pre-suspended performances, Russia is a good team and Georgia has been on the edge of being decent.   On a good day Canada can defeat Brazil, but we also have days where we lose to Ukraine, a team that loses to Malta on the regular.   As for 2028, let's hope South Africa decides to compete. We could also take on China/Japan.

      Canada beat France in the group stage and then lost to Ukraine today  Ukraine played at the 1996 Olympics, but was very weak later+ its base was in Mariupol, which they lost to Russia. I wonder where they train now?

      Well, I don't know if I expected anything from Argentina, Brazil, and Canada, but...   I think after this tournament, I'm sure that whoever qualifies will be humiliated in Los Angeles.

      Italy lost a friendly game to Hungary 0-2 yesterday and for me, that could be a key match, but Italy needs to win their opening 1-2 matches against Norway and Slovakia to have a chance to promote. Hungary has certainly been training together for several days and Italy will only be fully squad for today, with no Canadian head coach from OG, but just assistants from Italy and Canada for all the tournament. For it will be difficult for Italy to advance, especially since only team will advance- so the margin of error is practically zero. Italy definitely needs to win their first 1-2 matches, and then the crucial match against Hungary, who is a very strong team- Germany's level, in my opinion. It's a shame Austria isn't here instead of Hungary and that 2 teams aren't advancing to the Elite Division instead of one. Then I'd be much more at ease. Hungary is much better team for me than Austria in women hockey.

      I had found a nice Reddit post that had a comprehensive view of what was left and at what price.  Using that, I knew what I wanted to get.  Fortunately, things were smooth in the process overall.  One session was sold out of the tickets I wanted and I had to change dates, but ultimately, I'm pleased.  (Hey...we're going to the Olympics! )   We're going to see Women's Handball Prelims (we get to see two matches), and we will see Men's Lacrosse Prelims (where we get to see three matches...which means that we'll be guaranteed to see Team USA  ).   We were slightly constrained in availability (obviously) and also with the thought that we'll have our (then) 9 and 13 year old daughters with us, so it needed to be family-friendly and fun...and I think both of these tick that box.  I also wanted to see a sport we don't normally see here, so Handball definitely ticks that.   We ultimately would love to snag Climbing tickets (Women's Boulder specifically) and perhaps Women's Volleyball or Basketball (Team USA preferably), and our schedule does allow us some flexibility (we have several days between these events).  But, who knows if any will become available at any point (either in a future Drop or in Resale).   Best of luck to anyone else still wanting tickets!   Also wanted to share this Google Doc that some other kind soul on Reddit put together for anyone else planning.
