BMX Cycling at the Urban Cycling UCI World Championships 2018

Spain claims first gold medal of the 2018 UCI Urban Cycling World Championships

Alejandro Montalvo’s Spain took victory in front of Germany and France in Chengdu, China, on Wednesday, the opening day of the UCI World Championships for trials, mountain bike Eliminator and BMX Freestyle.

The Spanish trials team scored 580 points thanks in large part to its young star Alejandro Montalvo, a Junior 20” rider who nonetheless won the Elite UCI World Cup this year, and Sergi Llongueras (Men Elite 26”).

Both athletes scored 150 points.

The Spaniards finished just 20 points in front of Germany with the imperial Dominik Oswald (150), and 60 points in front of France, which had the highest individual scorer thanks to Nicolas Vallée (160).

Spain hadn’t featured on the highest step of the podium since 2010 but proved itself this year despite a late arrival the night before, the last delegation to reach Chengdu, after a long journey: “We were tired,” explained Irene Caminos, “but we took it very seriously today and this gold medal is a great reward for the team. Now it’s time for the individual events.”

The silver medal was bitter-sweet for Germany - winner of the bronze medal in 2015 and 2016 then silver last year -  as they were tied with Spain for much of the competition: “We have no regrets, we did good rides, good jumps, we were just 20 little points short,” said Nina Reichenbach. “Hopefully next year we will be at the top of the podium.”

Under the watchful eye of Vincent Hermance, in charge of the group for the team event, France, trying for a fourth title, had to make do with third place: “We have no regrets,” said Nicolas Vallée. “We are on the podium with a very different team. This medal is there to build the future.”

Trials action continues Thursday and Friday with the semi-finals of the individual competitions for the Women, Men Junior and Men Elite.

The five titles will be awarded on Saturday.

In the Olympic "Park" competition, :GBRGreat Britain dominated the men's qualifiers, with James Jones and Jack Clark 1st and 2nd respecitvely...

the recently crowned World Cup Champion, :CRO Marin Rantes, ended up only in 44th place and he didn't even qualify among the 24 riders (coming from 14 Nations) who will start the semifinal round...

the women's event didn't have any qualifying round and will start directly from the semifinals (even if they still call them qualifiers)...

That's all thanks to scoring 12 points in the second run...

    • Canoe Sprint There is a now a cap of 5 athletes per gender in the kayak events (down from 6 in 2024). The World Championships has been replaced by the Olympic Qualification Rankings.   K2 lost 2 boat quotas while K4 has gained 1 boat quota. Quota distribution is quite complicated as it usually is for canoe sprint. They also force nations to compete in a minimum number of events based on the number of athletes qualified; 2 and 3 athletes per boat class must compete in 2 events, 4 must compete in all 3 events and 5 must compete in all 3 events and have two entries in the K1 event.
    • Wrestling will have a completely new format, I do not like the changes. ranking isn't really a good idea in this sport, this will force wrestlers to compete in so many events to collect points. which is not good for their health. specially with the current UWW ranking points distribution system which is plain stupid   they are also gifting 18 quotas to very weak countries by that last qualification event. but I understand their point of view. can't wait to see lots of Russian wrestlers compete for weak countries for that 1 available quota.
    • Canoe Slalom Quotas from men's/women's K1 have been moved to men's/women's KX1. K1 will now have 14 quotas while KX1 will have 10 quotas. C1 remains at 17 quotas. Athletes may participate in other events up to a maximum of 2 athletes per NOC.   The World Championship qualifier has been dropped in favour of the Olympic Qualification Rankings (7 K1, 10 C1, 3 KX1), afterwards you have the Continental Qualifiers (1 per boat) and then a new Global Qualifier (2 per boat).   There were a few changes regarding ways to ensure an athlete can only obtain 1 quota. The biggest being at each stage the boat priority is K1 > KX1 > C1 for the rankings and KX1 > K1 > C1 for the continental/global qualifiers. This basically means if the same athlete qualifiers in multiple boats then the quota will be given to the kayak over canoe.
    • I'll post significant changes periodically. I'll start with the recently added/updated documents.   Archery The addition of mixed compound (12M & 12W) forced a reduction on the recurve side. The mixed compound quotas are distributed as follows   Host - 1 World Championships - 3 Continental Games - 5 World Ranking List - 2 Final Qualifier - 1   To compensate the team events will now only have 8 nations. 2 quotas were removed from the World Ranking List and 2 were removed from the Final Qualifier.   Individual recurve and mixed recurve distribution is the same
    • In Rome, it would be useful to roof the swimming pool complex at Foro Italico, possibly with the option of retracting the roof and covering the tennis court complex. Overall, there's a lot to do, for example, compared to Budapest, but unfortunately, this is Italy How many years has Roma been building their new stadium, and they keep pushing back the completion date- now I read it's 2030? and it should be ready. The same goes for Milan- there should be a modern complex of indoor swimming pools with 50 meters pools, etc., but there's a problem with one stupid football stadium, which will only be built after an ultimatum from UEFA
