Awful news, but not unexpected unfortunately.

That sucks. Not surprising, but sucks. The men's program was really starting to look like it was rounding into something formidable

He was the first Canadian male swimmer to win 2 medals in a single Olympics since Curtis Myden in 1996. It's a shame.

Had quite the drought after Myden packed it in

Absolutely. He got another bronze in 2000, then it was nothing in 2004, Cochrane with a bronze in 2008, then got a silver in 2012 with Hayden and Weinberger with bronzes. 2016 finally got the country back on track in the water. Penny was our first female to get a medal in the pool in 20 years, and the first Canadian to get gold since Tewksbury in 1992. First woman to get gold since Ottenbrite in 1984.

Unless I'm missing something, Ottenbrite was the first woman swimmer to ever get gold for Canada. That means MacNeil was the third woman, and Summer was the fourth. I did not realize that.

I know Canada had lots of strong female swimmers in the 70s, and probably could have snagged a gold if not the 1980 boycott. Women swimmers were responsible for 7/11 medals Canada won in Montreal '76.

Just took a trip down Wikipedia/Memory Lane.

The boycott and the East German's doping program kept us from some golds between '76 and '80... I think Bruce McDonald mentioned one time that we could have swept the podium in the women's 400 IM if it wasn't for one of them. C'est la vie I guess.

But yeah, the swimming program really took off in the lead up to Montreal, then we had the echo in the 80's and 90's... then it got pretty lean until the Pan-Am's kick started things again
