5 medals on night one of Junior Pan Pacs:

  • Silver for Ethan Ekk in the Men's 200m Freestyle (1:48.76)
  • Bronze for Madison Kryger in the Women's 100m Backstroke (1:00.69)
  • Gold for Aiden Norman in the Men's 100m Backstroke (54.10, lead off mixed medley relay in 53.86!)
  • Silver for Julia Strojnowska in the Women's 1500m Freestyle (16:37.72)
  • Silver in the Mixed Medley Relay (3:49.91)

Keep in mind that Canada only won 3 medals at the 2022 edition (including not winning any gold medals) so we've already passed that performance on night 1.

The breastroke leg on the relay from Oliver Dawson was 1:00.22. Wow!

Can we continue prayer circles here?

What's the strength of Australia/United States/Others? This looks really good for our future.

All of the top 4 nations are without their top junior swimmers since athletes that participated in the Olympics can't compete here. Hence why we see the US and their infinite depth dominating the medal table here. Australia is probably the most impacted so far since their two best junior swimmers (Olivia Wunsch and Jaclyn Barclay) would've helped their medal count a lot on night 1.

I've started to compile junior rankings for this year. If you exclude Russian athletes, Aiden Norman is comfortably the top junior in the 100 back. I think Madison Kryger is currently 11th and Ethan Ekk 11th or 12th in their respective events which considering they still have at least one more year of junior eligibility is pretty good.

4 more medals on night 2 of Junior Pan Pacs:

  • Silver for Laon Kim in the Boys 100m Freestyle (49.37), now ranked 11th among juniors this year
  • Bronze for Oliver Dawson in the Boys 100m Breaststroke (1:01.27), roughly ranked around 14th among juniors this year
  • Silver in the Girls 4x200m Freestyle Relay (8:02.77), Julia Strojnowska with the best split leading off in 1:59.21, everybody else over 2 minutes
  • Bronze in the Boys 4x200m Freestyle Relay (7:17.73), pretty solid splits all around: Ethan Ekk - 1:48.68 leadoff, Laon Kim - 1:49.63, Alexander Miao - 1:50.14, Aiden Norman - 1:49.28

Once again, a friendly reminder that Canada won a whopping total of 3 MEDALS in total at the 2022 Junior Pan Pacs

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy that we’re achieving success, but how big of an indicator is it that these young stars will progress to become senior Olympic medalists and finalists?

Usually there's a positive correlation, but some people peak at juniors while others are invisible and then build in their 20s.

The good news is we're creating depth which then increases the odds someone will break-out at senior level. That's a sign of a good youth program.

5 medals on night 3 bringing the total to 14 medals

  • Bronze for Julia Strojnowska in the Girls 400m Freestyle (4:11.52)
  • GOLD for Aiden Norman in the Boys 200m Backstroke (1:57.67), just 0.17 off of the OQT and ranks 2nd in the world among juniors this year)
  • Bronze for Ethan Ekk in the Boys 200m Backstroke (1:58.28), 8th in the world among juniors this year)
  • Bronze in the Girls 4x100m Freestyle Relay (3:42.34), 14 year old Reina Liu had the fastest split at 55.14 so that's promising for the future)
  • Bronze in the Boys 4x100m Freestyle Relay (3:19.07), Laon Kim lead off in 49.45 and Aiden Norman anchored in 49.40

Two more medals on the final night to bring the final total to 16 medals:

  • Bronze for Ella Cosgrove in the Girls 800m Freestyle (8:40.00)
  • Silver in the Boys 4x100m Medley Relay (3:36.13)

The boys were so close to beating the US! They just lost by 0.53 seconds. Aiden Norman lead off in 53.73!! He's the 3rd swimmer to go under the OQT this year. Dawson with another solid split at 1:00.77. Valient effort from Nicholas Duncan. The butterfly was always going to be the weakest leg but he split a respectable 53.07. Then Laon Kim split 48.56 on the freestyle :yikes:. Overall, I would say that this is very promising for the medley relay in 2028. Butterfly will not be much of an issue then.

Other results that caught my attention:

  • 13 year old Shima Taghavi finished 6th in the Girls 200m Breaststroke A-Final in 2:32.88. That's just 0.28 seconds off her PB.
  • Despite finishing 4th in the women's medley relay, Madison Kryger lead off with a backstroke time of 1:00.57. That's a new PB for her and puts her just outside the top 10 in the world junior rankings this year. 2 of those swimmers in the top 10 are Summer McIntosh and Delia Lloyd so overall, that's 3 Canadians in the top 11 in the women's 100m backstroke rankings.

    • And this is the final Medal Table fo the XX Bolivarian Games in
    • Agreed. But OTOH, the chances of a Male Team pursuit medal also seem rather slim at the moment, so why the hassle of dropping someone.
    • I have a sports database with millions of entries, which I then convert graphically on my Wikipedia sandbox.
    • Wouldn't be surprised to see the same this time. The men's 500m has basically on or with luck two medal chances, but certainly not three (semi-realistic) ones. With Beau Snellink for now not exactly on his way to an Olympic ticket and Patrick Roest still questionable, that might only leave Chris Huizinga, Jorrit Bergsma and Marcel Bosker, and that is not exactly a group one would want to have in the team pursuit.
