So now our gold medals have come on 1. a judging error and 2. a fall by a japanese skater in the last lap . I'll take it!

Also is it safe to say that Weidemann will be the closing ceremony flag bearer or could it be someone else?

Do they do men/women at the Closing too?  It could be her and Parrot.

Well, Canada had the 3rd fastest time today in speed skating, although it doesn't matter.

In the finals. All of the top 4 teams went faster than us in the semis.

Semis don't count.  Well, none of this counts for Canada.  :d

I swear, Team Gushue is trying to lose.  Russia is playing horribly, and Canada isn't letting them be the worst team on the ice.

Even the commentators are speechless.

Despite ROC's best efforts, they ended up beating Canada.  For those that didn't see the match, that was mixed doubles against Australia-level bad for Canada.  ROC could have been up 4-0 after 1 but it took 2 horrible shots by their skip to give it up.  A few other times ROC could have locked it up but they did their best to lose.  Canada just wouldn't let them have the loss, though.  It was really something to witness.

All three teams in Beijing have been terrible.  Gushue may make the playoffs just because of the logjam, but he likely won't win a medal.  Jones will have to continue to fight just to make the playoffs, and again if she does it likely won't be a medal.  And of course the mixed doubles was a debacle.

Final Thoughts

Good news is we won our second gold medal and two medals overall. Bad news, that's just about all we did today. An overall poor day in freestyle skiing and our men's curling team lost to Russia, though are still alive. Canada won over China in men's ice hockey, not in a convincing fashion, but they are probably thinking about the game tomorrow. Also a shout-out to the men's biathlon relay for finishing 6th

    • Does the CAS have the authority to address from someone who believes the judges made a mistake in a given discipline? Pizzolato's last attempt at Paris 2024, which earned him the bronze medal, was controversial, but what does the CAS have to do with it? Even if the judges made a mistake then, the result won't change and this isn't the only case where someone feels wronged with this in world of sports. Unless, of course, they have some evidence of corruption or something like that
    • If Pizzolato will to return, would it be to the 86 kg category, or the 94 kg category, like Nasar? In 2024, they were both in the 89 kg category, which will no longer be at the Olympics, but in 2021 in Tokyo, Pizzolato won a medal in the 81 kg category.   Of course, it's unclear what's going on with the rape accusations- personally, unfortunately, I don't think he was ever a sweet angel- he was accused of other immoral things also 10 years ago, but gang rape? I find that hard to believe... Besides, Moldova has appealed about his bronze medal from Paris 2024 to the CAS- the verdict was supposed to be in February. Do you know anything about this? Did they have any grounds for this lawsuit at all?
    • Ukraine won 6 gold medals out of 10 in the women's competotion  + 1 silver and 1 bronze. Where do they get these girls from? It's always been a strong country, but they have never dominated like this. I wonder if their training methods would work in another country and if their coaches have any offerts to job from other countries? However, there is a significant decline in women's judo in Ukraine, so maybe they have directed all their resources and money towards wrestling?   In fact, Ukraine dominates Europe as much as Japan does the world- they have the best school in women's wrestling. In 2024, Ukraine only won 1 silver medal at the Paris Olympics? So even domination in Europe doesn't guarantee even 1 gold medal at the Olympics. Although, of course, if Italy for example, can't even win 1 bronze medal at the European Championships, then there's no point in even going to the World Championships...
    • Sablikova started on the road cycling and just almost qualified for Rio 2016. Maybe Lollobrigida would like to join the Italian track team? She has the good character and 2 medals at the Olympics, one in winter and one in summer, would be a legendary achievement, not only in Italy.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martina_Sáblíková
    • One Wiebes is worth more than the all Italian team with Balsamo/Fidanza, etc., that much clear. Even if the Netherlands loses its dominance in the men's sprint, Wiebes will win 2-3 gold medals in other events. Just relax, man.
    • I'm most worried about our women's team in the pursuit – we have a reserve squad, but not advancing to the top 8 is a shame. We recently competed with out 1 team and had not good in 1 round. It doesn't look good. And the Netherlands are already taking Wiebes to the track team and will soon dominate the Madison/Omnium as well. Balsamo and Paternoster haven't made any progress for years and the our women's team at the Olympics has little chance to win a medal. Italy might even win World Championship/European Championship gold in the years after the Olympics, etc., but when the real fight comes, the UK or the USA will always beat us
    • Track cycling is one of the few sports where there is no host nation quota, so  will need to work hard to achieve our quotas.  It's not our best sport, but was happy to see Top 10 results in the Elimination Race for Grant Koontz and Emma Jimenez Palos (who is just 18!).
    • Yes, I saw the same thing you did @clemsonbeav (on both accounts) but I agree it looks pretty stock.
    • Also, I just logged back into my account, where it sent me to update my profile, and when I saved that, I got a screen that included a check mark next to 'Registered for the Draw'.  Not sure I totally trust it, but it does at least say so.  (There's nothing specifically referencing Drop 2 or anything...might just be a stock screen.). I'm curious what it would look like if you looked at it @esube.  https://tickets.la28.org/
