fun facts...

in the men's division, the 5 heaviest classes have the same kind of final bout: RUS vs KAZ...:yikes:

is that a coincidence?

OK, if you're convinced of that...:zip::facepalm:

p.s. and RUS also have 2 more finalists, for a total of 7 men out of 12 reaching the final act...

do you still think of a coincidence?

OK...I really appreciate your optimism (and your naive mood)...

at least, among the girls there's a bit more balance...

IND and the usual RUS have both 4 finalists, meanwhile KAZ have 3 and the very rich Western Countries of GBR and USA have 2...:whistle:

First Ten Youth World champions crowned after an exciting first day of finals in Budapest

Men’s Light Fly (49kg)
The first final of the day saw Thailand’s Thitisan Panmod taking on Puerto Rico’s 17-year-old Jan Paul Rivera with the Light Fly gold medal at stake. Panmod, who joined the National Team in 2014, took the control of the distance from the first ring of the bell delivering a performance to remember getting an unanimous victory to be crowned as AIBA Youth World Champion.

:THA Thitisan PANMOD b. :PUR Jan Paul RIVERA PIZARRO  by PTS (5-0)

Men’s Bantam (56kg)
Uzbekistan’s boxing powerhouse walked out of the last edition of the Youth World Championships without any gold medal, but this trend was broken today by Abdumalik Khalokov. The Uzbek met with Russia’s Vsevolod Shumkov and used his tricky style and world class footwork to defeat his opponent and clinch the gold at the Duna Arena.

:UZB Abdumalik KHALOKOV b. :RUS Vsevolod SHUMKOV  by PTS (5-0)

Men’s Light Welter (64kg)
Russia’s EUBC European Youth Champion Ilia Popov had put together an excellent run to reach the Light Welterweight final in Budapest, but Cuba’s Idalberto Umara proved to be a tricky target as his footwork repeatedly got him out of trouble. As Popov committed more energy to his attacks, Umara was able to counter effectively, and at the end of the three rounds, it was Cuba who was able to celebrate their first gold in Budapest.

:CUB Idalberto UMARA IRIBAR b. :RUS Ilia POPOV  by PTS (3-2)

Men’s Middle (75kg)
Kazakh Nurbek Oralbay went into the Middleweight final against Russia’s Daniil Teterev and exuded confidence against the tough and talented Russian boxer. After a slow start for the Kazakh that saw Teterev taking early advantage, Oralbay increased the rhythm of the action in the second round and turned back the Final to conquer his first Youth World Championships gold medal.

:KAZ Nurbek ORALBAY b. :RUS Daniil TETEREV by PTS (4-1)

Men’s Heavy (91kg)
After three negative results on the Finals Day 1, the Russian team was able to turn the tide at Heavyweight, with Igor Fedorov over-powering Kazakhstan’s Aibek Oralbay to record a stylish victory. Fedorov delivered an inspired first three-minute period to take the contest away from his opponent and had enough left in the tank to keep the Kazakh at bay as the bout drew to a close and earn the Russians their first gold in Budapest.

:RUS Igor FEDOROV b. :KAZ Aibek ORALBAY by PTS (3-2)

Women’s Light Fly
Defending Women’s Youth World Champion Nitu Ghanghas met Thailand’s Nillada Meekoon in the women’s light flyweight category for a re-match of the ASBC Women’s Youth Championships. The talented Thai boxer surprised India’s Nitu on the first round, but the Indian star improved her performance to take over the bout and become two-times AIBA Youth World Champion.

:IND NITU b. :THA Nillada MEEKOON by PTS (4-1)

Women’s Bantam (54kg)
Iyana Verduzco proved to be one of the outstanding performers in Budapest despite being the youngest member of the USA team. The USA boxer added the Bantamweight Youth title to her CV in impressive fashion with a victory over Kazakhstan’s Aizada Yeslyamgali. The two boxers spent much of the first-round probing for weaknesses in the other’s defences, Yeslyamgali looking well organised and efficient with her jabs, but it was Verduzco who raised the tempo most effectively as the bout wore on, crowning an excellent tournament with a hard-earned gold medal.

:USA Iyana VERDUZCO b. :KAZ Aizada YESLYAMGALI by PTS (4-1)

Women’s Light (60kg)
If there is an English women boxer with potential to emulate the impressive record of Nicola Adams, this boxer is Caroline Dubois. The 17-year-old English boxer met with Russia’s Nune Asatrian and dominated the first two rounds of the Final by using her fantastic footwork. Dubois’ accurate counter-punches during the third round made her improve the distance with her opponent to earn a well-deserved gold medal. Dubois will now add a Youth World title to the 3 European gold medals to complete her impressive record.

:ENG Caroline Sara DUBOIS b. :RUS Nune ASATRIAN  by PTS (5-0)

Women’s Welter (69kg)
Charlie Cavanagh wrote a new page on Canada’s boxing story by becoming the first Youth Women World Champion from her country. The 18-year-old New Brunswick-based boxer stepped on the ring after completing an impressive road to the Finals, and Cavanagh didn’t disappoint delivering a well-rounded performance to defeat Russia’s Angelina Kabakova at the Duna Arena.

:CAN Charlie CAVANAGH b. :RUS Angelina KABAKOVA  by PTS (5-0)

Women’s Light Heavy (81kg)
Russia’s Anastasiia Rybak avenged her defeat at the 2017 Youth World Championships in Guwahati after defeating the ASBC Asian Women’s Youth Champion Guzal Sadykova from Kazakhstan. In one the closest bouts of the day, the Russian boxer was able to overcome Sadykova’s impressive start to clinch the last gold medal at stake today at Budapest’s Duna Arena.

:RUS Anastasiia RYBAK b. :KAZ Guzal SADYKOVA  by PTS (3-2)

  • Latest Posts around Totallympics

    • Posted my votes.    For the first time our small country has an athlete, who without a doubt should deserve best athlete of the year award. Without being too "cocky", Armand Duplantis is the only real threat to Tadej Pogačar.
    • And not at all by decades of neglect of fire hazards by incompetent Marxist politicians, no sirreee bob.  Everyone knows it is wind that causes fires, which is why we get so many in the north of Scotland.
    • Southern California is currently experiencing one of the worst fire events in my lifetime caused by an extreme wind event
    • Still deciding, but NHL, NFL, NBA, club volleyball (as usual), Gim-Kim in some Korean Curling event, GSOC WFG Masters, Women’s U18 World Championships, and the Australian Open for sure, Junior FIS World Championships, BWF Malaysia Masters, big air/slopestyle freestyle skiing and snowboarding/alpine snowboarding, other winter sports (Luge/bobsleigh/skeleton/alpine skiing), Speed Skating European Championships   Water Polo WC and Men’s Handball World Championships I’ll be following along with scores.
    • Rams could well beat Vikings and this is a real coin toss. Sam Darnold's first playoff game and he looked bad vs Lions last weekend in the #1 seed decider already. This is one of these rare games when a wild card team has a much better record and the home team is the underdog on paper but Rams can pull this one off and it ends up being a "non-upset" upset.
    • For my predictions I’m assessing a number of factors into it. For example in the comeback category, I prioritize injuries/life or career threatening stuff over breaks. World Championships, World Cups (and similar stuff for sports that don’t have those) also factor into it.    BEST MALE ATHLETE for sportsmen in Olympic sports   #1:  Leon Marchand #2:  Armand Duplantis (3 WR’s in a year…) #3:  Teddy Riner   Odermatt not being nominated is unexpected.      BEST FEMALE ATHLETE for sportswomen in Olympic sports   #1:  Summer McIntosh #2:  Sifan Hassan #3:  Lisa Carrington     BEST NON-OLYMPIC ATHLETE for athletes in Non-Olympic sports and disciplines   #1:  Shohei Ohtani #2:  Patrick Mahomes #3:  Max Verstappen     BEST PARALYMPIC ATHLETE for athletes with a disability   #1: #2: #3:     BEST YOUTH ATHLETE for athletes up to 18 years old (born after January 1st, 2006) (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  Summer McIntosh (again) #2:  Lamine Yamal #3:  Darja Varfolomeev     BEST MEN'S TEAM for national men's teams or groups (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  basketball team #2:  waterpolo team #3:  volleyball team     BEST WOMEN'S TEAM for national women's teams or groups (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  volleyball team #2:  handball team #3:  field hockey team   If I’m gonna be completely honest, after #1 and #2, I had a hard time choosing one because all four teams had their struggles…      BEST DOUBLES/PAIR OR MIXED TEAM for doubles and pairs or mixed teams and groups (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  Caterina Banti/Tito Ruggeri #2:  David Åhman/Jonatan Hellvig #3:  Paul O’Donovan/Fintan McCarthy   I had to let out a laugh when I saw that  Duda/AP were nominated, because even though they won gold they were not on the same page at all through most of the season and went months on the Beach Pro Tour between May and July without a single medal      BREAKTHROUGH OF THE YEAR for the most improved athlete (aged 19 or over) or national team (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  Adriana Ruano #2:  Jasmine Paolini #3:  Shinnosuke Oka   Again, some of the nominations are confusing to me.  Vaast is surfing at his home break in Tahiti and like a lot of sports that advantage is big,  Lafond had a best jump of 14.90m in 2023 and  Alfred was a medal contender in 2023 as well.    I would put  Joan-Benjamin Gaba up there, he came into the Olympics completely out of the medal mix and he won silver and beat Hifumi by ippon in the mixed team final     COMEBACK OF THE YEAR for athletes or national teams who made a comeback performance in 2024 (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  Sunisa Lee #2:  Paula Badosa #3:  Kristof Milak     SPORT MOMENT OF THE YEAR for any sport moment from 2024   #1:  Djokovic finally winning an Olympic gold medal in men’s singles tennis (and none of the other choices come close for me, honestly) #2:  Letsile Tebogo’s gold in the men’s 200m, first ever gold for Botswana and he also beats evil Lyles in the process  #3:  Armand Duplantis’ gold and WR in men’s pole vault   I wasn’t a fan the opening ceremony, and I thought the general consensus was that most people on here didn’t like it either, so I’m not sure on how it got nominated but…  Also thought there would be at least one non-Olympic nomination, but I guess not.   OLYMPIC SPIRIT AWARD for athletes or teams related to the 2024 Summer Olympics or Paralympics who exemplify the spirit of sportsmanship in the Games or showed great determination in overcoming obstacles   #1:  Kinzang Lhamo crossing the marathon finish line #2:  Fariba Hashimi fulfilling her Olympic dream, having to hide her practices from her parents and the Taliban for doing a “boys’ activity” #3: Same thing for  Manizha Talash, I can’t imagine how hard that must be for them…   Honestly, this was a tough category. Besides Skotheim, who I very clearly think is last… I feel like it could go in any order.
