I don't like the New Zealand/South Africa approach. Why denying them a place at the Olympics when they have met the criteria? Why telling them you're not going because you don't meet OUR criteria? This is going towards the maximum of professionalism, as far away as possible from de Coubertin's ideals.

Because not every country thinks "Oh alright, you might not have a realistic chance to get a top-20 result, but come on, have fun!"  

 

I can accept countries wanting their athletes to show a certain capability to at least get close to the top spots, which the international standards usually don't require.

But that was Coubertin's idea... Anyway, it's just cruel to deny your athletes from Olympics participation. Like: "They can participate at World championships, continental championships, but Olympics are forbidden, because we want to look very successful." Coubertin would ban such nations from the Olympics.

Coubertin would ban women from the Olympics too if it were up to him, so I doubt we should take his thoughts too serious nowadays

well if Fiji win gold in mens rugby we are in trouble
