HOW EVENTS CAN BE ADDED TO THE BRISBANE 2032 OLYMPIC GAMES

 

INITIAL SPORTS PROGRAMME

 

The initial sports programme, which includes all sports for a specific edition of the Olympic Games, is determined by the IOC Session from among the sports governed by the International Federations (IFs) recognised by the IOC.

 

Only sports which comply with the Olympic Charter, the World Anti-Doping Code and the Olympic Movement Code on the Prevention of the Manipulation of Competition are eligible to be in the programme.

 

ORGANISING COMMITTEE PROPOSE ADDITIONAL SPORTS

 

With the implementation of Olympic Agenda 2020, the process of establishing the Olympic programme changed to boost the popularity of the Olympic Games while ensuring that the numbers of athletes, and the cost and complexity of the Games remained manageable.

 

So this new process came into effect from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games onwards.

1. International Sport Federations make their case to the Brisbane Organising Committee for their sport’s inclusion at the 2032 Olympic Games
2. The Brisbane Organising Committee then considers all the proposals, consults with stakeholders and decides which additional events they wish to formally propose to the IOC Programme Commission be added to the 2032 Olympic Games
3. The IOC Programme Commission then considers this proposal and makes recommendations to the IOC Executive Board
4. As the event programme must be finalised no later than three years prior to the Brisbane 2032 Opening Ceremony, approval of any additional events must then be made by the IOC Executive Board by Monday, 23 July 2029.

 

IOC RECOGNISED INTERNATIONAL SPORT FEDERATIONS

 

So, for an additional event to be approved by the IOC Executive Board to be added to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games, the International Sport Federation which runs that event must be recognised by the IOC.

Brisbane 2032 Venues Announcement event 25 March 2025

 

Following completion of the 100-Day Games Review, the new Queensland Government has announced in this Courier Mail that it will announce the Brisbane 2032 Venues Plan on 25 March 2025 following consulations/approvals with Games stakeholders.

 

I hope that they can stick to this all-encompassing, consultations-complete timeline of 25 March. Perhaps this tight timeline is a real indication that changes to the existing overall Brisbane 2032 venues and infrastructure plan are not going to be widespread as was first thought ?

I mean if the government were to support widespread changes to the Venues plan, then 17 days (8-25 March) is an awfully short period of time for consultations and approval with and from the IOC, affected international sport federations and government.

So for this reason, I’m guessing that widespread venue changes and infrastructure projects will not be happening.

Perhaps a new stadium for track and field, ceremonies and legacy tenants AFL & Cricket and that’s it ... everythng else pretty much unchanged including Brisbane Arena staying in Roma Street Parklands. A Maroochydore rail line likely a bridge too far.

But that’s only my guess. Perhaps now’s a good time to begin lowering our expectations of what is coming.

Yes, …. and hoping too for some leaks from 8 March onwards.

• Queensland Premier David Crisafulli will unveil his 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games venues and infrastructure plan at The Courier-Mail’s Future Brisbane Special Event on 25 March, which has already been sold out.

 

• It will be the most significant announcement for Brisbane since winning the bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

 

• More than 300 people, including leaders of government, industry and Brisbane 2032 decision makers will be at Howard Smith Wharves for the announcement.

• As revealed last week, the Queensland Government will release the 100-day infrastructure review report, and its response, on Tuesday, March 25.

 

• The government will receive the report on March 8 and then use the subsequent 16 days to consult other levels of government, the International Olympic Committee and 2032 organising committee President Andrew Liveris.

Boxing is on track to be back for Brisbane 2032 and LA 2028 with the IOC today granting provisional recognition to World Boxing as the official governing body for the sport.

The disgraced IBA, former boxing world governing body, is now firmly banished from the Olympics.

No Crocodile Concerns - Olympic Rowing Course, Fitzroy River - Rockhampton

 

From ABC News Australia:

 

Crocodile farm owner John Lever, who has been working with the animals for more than 40 years, said the population in the river should not be a concern and could be managed.

"I think we have to look at it sensibly. It's a great opportunity ... it's a fabulous river," Mr Lever said.

 

"Crocodiles are most active at night and there won't be night-time activities. Crocs are actively feeding at the water's edge and the rowing will be held over deep water."

 

Mr Lever is a long-time advocate of the government re-categorising the stretch of the river where rowing is held as an active removal zone to have crocodiles surveyed, trapped and removed.

 

He said crocodiles were less active in winter when the Olympics were expected to be held (in July/August winter time).

 

"You're more likely to get hit by a bus on the way to the boat ramp than you are to be taken by a croc," he said.

 

"In the winter time when the water temperatures go right down, the crocodiles become lethargic and don't eat much because they can't digest food.”

River Flow in the Fitzroy River, Rockhampton: Olympics/Paralympics Rowing/Canoe Venue

With some concerned with river flow unfairly affecting some rowers/canoe paddlers more than others in both types of races, Rockhampton Regional Council said the months of July and August, when the Olympic/Paralympic competitions will be held traditionally saw the least need for the Fitzroy Barrage to open in response to river flows.

Queensland Senator Matt Canavan also says:
“Rowing authorities, who wanted the rowing held elsewhere, have raised the issue of the streamflow of the Fitzroy river, but this question has locals scratching their heads as much as the crocodile hype has.”

“The Olympic Games are due to be held in winter, and Rockhampton gets barely any rain then.”

“A recent hydrological study of the Fitzroy concluded that the river falls to almost zero flow in the winter months.”

“World rowing rules state that courses should have no significant current, which is generally interpreted as a streamflow velocity of 0.1m per second or less to ensure fairness across lanes.”

“Data from the Fitzroy River shows that in July and August (when the Games will occur) flow rates are below this threshold 99.9 per cent of the time.”

“Indeed, the average flow rate at this time of year is half the recommended threshold. And this data is from a gauge upstream of a weir. The flow rates at the rowing course will be even lower than this.”

“World rowing authorities have also been flexible on these rules for the Los Angeles games in 2028.”

“The rowing in LA will occur at the Marine Stadium at Long Beach.”

“This rowing course is connected to the ocean and affected by tides.”

“Flow rates in the waters surrounding the course (in LA) have been measured at up to 0.2m per second, double the recommended threshold.”

“Marine Stadium at Long Beach has been approved despite this.”

“And the rowing course in LA will be the shortest in Olympic history at just 1500m, rather than the standard 2000m.”

“Unlike LA, the Fitzroy River is not impacted by tides because barrages control flows from the ocean.”

“And, unlike LA, neither the streamflow rules nor the length of the course will need to be compromised to hold Olympic rowing at Rockhampton.”

So both World Rowing and the International Canoe Federation (ICF) will need to do their inspections and technical assessments during July/August which is when the Olympic/Paralympic competitions will be held.
