Does Sun Yang 🇨🇳 have a realistic chance of making it to Paris? What events can he enter to post a OQT? Will China select him?

Isn't he still banned ?

A quick Google search says he was banned for 4 years and 3 months from February 28th, 2020, so assuming his ban ends at the end of May of this year. The qualification period runs until June 23rd so theoretically he could qualify but it is beyond unlikely to be honest.

China's selection policies as their written rule it out (last trials meet is before his ban ends and they're saying they won't put anyone on the team who has served a doping ban, though I suppose the latter could be legally challenged). But it is China, so you never know.

not enough for the Italian Federation, but earlier Today at the Italian Spring Nationals more OQTs ("FINA version") were achieved:

  • men's 100m Backstroke, Michele Lamberti 53.46
  • men's 100m Breaststroke, Federico Poggio 59.46
  • women's 100m Fly, Costanza Cocconcelli 57.77
  • women's 200m Breaststroke, Francesca Fangio 2.23.90

So if they don't get the necessary time at the Sette Colli Trophy, is there still a chance that the Italian federation will send them to the Olympics?

yes, I think so

Cocconcelli is sure to go to Paris because of the relays

Lamberti is also on the rising curve (and we might need him for the medley relay, especially if we don't get anybody swimming a good 100m Fly -then Ceccon will be used for that and Lamberti would automatically make the Backstroke leg in that relay)

Fangio's time is almost a lock for the semifinals, so they should give her a chance

the 100m Breastroke for men is a different beast, as we still have at least 3 men (Poggio, Viberti and Cerasuolo -all of them were in the 59s yesterday) still competing for a place next to Martinenghi in Paris (where surely we're gonna have 2 specialists, but who? :mumble:)

the Settecolli meet will be a final shootout between those 3 mentioned above, I think

    • Of the top teams the world with traditions, only Portugal didn`t play in 3 World Cups in a row: 1986-2002 (1990, 1994 and 1998), but then fewer teams played in the World Cup than now. I don't really remember what caused the crisis in Portuguese football in the 1990s or how it was done with this later? Perhaps we should follow their example?
    • Well... If not qualifying for the World Cup for the third consecutive time isn't enough to bring about change in Italy, I can't imagine what will be.
    • Gravina is simply stupid and probably has some kind of hold over other important key figures in Italian football, since he was elected in 2024 with a majority of over 90% of the votes... I have a hard time imagining it any other way. Compared to him, even Carraro, Berlusconi and Moggi seem like nice and kind gentlemens   Some people believe that Calciopoli in 2006 began the decline of Italian football and that may be true. It only got worse from there, not counting a single accidental Euro 2021 win- something similar to Greece in 2004. In 2009 Roberto Baggio prepared a 900-page report on necessary reforms in Italian football, but the then-FIGC board tossed it into the trash bin. Now we see the consequences...
    • I thought our former football President was greedy, selfish, power hungry and delusional, but apparently he has an equal counterpart in Gravina. Some people just lack common decency.
    • Well, it's possible that Italians may be more bitter towards short track officials after the robbery they perpetrated against Sighel at the Olympics and therefore more willing to comment and criticize them, but it doesn't make the decision any less ridiculous.   Also, the fact we are Italians, and therefore used to the low standards of football refereeing, makes us especially qualified and trained to identify biased/crooked/incompetent judging
    • I think it was never in the history of our sport has there been anyone as brazen and stupid as Gravina. Before presidents would resign, or at least hide for a while, rather than go into a full-blow scandalous attitude with full larrogance and pride. I hope this idiot gets fired anyway, even if he doesn't resign.
