Ondrej Nepela won the Olympic gold for Czechoslovakia in 1972 in Sapporo (japan), He was a three-time World champion (in a row) (1971-73) and five-time European champion (in a row) (1969-73). He died in Mannheim, Germany, in 1989 at the age of 38. In 1993, the Slovak Figure Skating Association established the Ondrej Nepela Memoriál (now Trophy) to honor the nine-time Czechoslovak Champion. Nepela was named the Slovak Athlete of the 20th Century in 2000. The Ice rink arena of the KHL club Slovan Bratislava in Bratislava (which will btw host the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships) is named in his honor Ondrej Nepela Stadium.
