  1. Finland - United States 3-2
  2. Czechs on top Down 0-2, Vujtek's men bounce back The Czech Republic's Richard Jarusek #96 looks for a scoring chance against Sweden's Jacob Markstrom #25 during preliminary round action at the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey Championship. The Czech Republic opened up a two-point lead in Group A after a come-from-behind win over Sweden in a game that featured two short-handed goals. A topsy-turvy game between two of the big contenders in Group A featured clinical breakaways, wonderful composure among both sets of forwards and great character as the Czech Republic fought back to down Sweden 4-2. A trio of unanswered goals in the second period enabled the Czechs to wipe out a 0-2 deficit and make it three wins from three, paced by three points from Michal Birner. For David Pastrnak, scorer of the opening Czech goal, these are exciting times to be part of the national set-up. "We have a young team and we're excited to be here," said the young Boston Bruins forward. "We want to show everyone we can play. We have a lot of energy and we're felling good about our chances. We've played three good games now and I think we're getting better and better." But it all started very differently. The Swedes got ahead in the 10th minute on a power play goal from Robert Rosen. The Vaxjo Lakers man opened his World Championship account last night against Norway and here he got the deflection that took Erik Gustafsson’s shot from the point past Pavel Francouz and the video official was satisfied that there was no high stick involved. The Czechs had their chances to respond, particularly on a power play late in the first. But while the forwards struggled to find a killer chance on Jacob Markstrom a blunder allowed Sweden to snatch a short-handed second. Michal Repik was the unfortunate forward, coughing up the puck in the Swedish zone and inadvertently setting Mattias Sjogren on a dart up the ice. The Ak Bars Kazan forward was joined by Martin Lundberg, who applied a nerveless finish that left Francouz clutching at thin air. The Czechs had a good chance to get one back early in the second as the puck travelled a long way across the Swedish zone to find Roman Cervenka in acres of space at the back post. But Cervenka took his time setting up his wrister and Markstrom was able to slide into position and shrug away the danger. Frustration soon turned to celebration. Cervenka behind the net, waiting for the perfect pass, found David Pastrnak’s stick on the slot. 1-2. "I just came off the bench and went to the post," Pastrnak said of his goal. "Roman made a great pass to me and I put it high." More composed offence: Jakub Jerabek shaped to shoot but saw Jan Kovar move into a menacing position. Potential slap shot became an inch-perfect pass as the Metallurg Magnitogorsk man turned in yet another big goal in Russia. 2-2. Then another short-handed goal, this time for Birner, put the Czechs in front deep in the second. Alexander Wennberg lost control of the puck and Birner was in full flight. Gustafsson slid out of position, inviting the Czech forward to shoot over the glove and complete the turnaround. After all that excitement the third period had much to live up to. Both teams continued to play open, attacking hockey with play switching from end to end at high speed. But it was the Czechs that created the better opportunities with Richard Jarusek twice getting a good look at Markstrom's net while Cervenka came close after Patrick Cehlin was caught in possession in centre ice. And the killer goal arrived in the 55th minute with Birner again doing the damage. As before, he swept up a loose puck in centre ice and surged forward, this time shooting from the deep slot and seeing a deflection off a Swedish stick lift the puck beyond Markstrom. Sweden responded with a bold gamble: the goalie came out with five minutes still to play. It almost backfired at once when Tomas Filippi went close to an empty net goal before Tomas Plekanec clipped the outside of the unprotected post. But the Tre Kronor continued to risk it and Gustafsson was agonisingly close to seeing his slap shot deflected into the net in the 57th minute. Rosen, Sweden's opening goalscorer, explained that pulling the goalie with so much time to play was a gamble with no down side. "We were down two goals and we had notthing to lose," he said. "Playing so long with six on five at least gave us a chance to try to score the goals we needed but it didn't work out this time."

  4. Exactly, The top-four ranked teams of each group advance to the quarter-finals that will be played cross-over. The first-place team in each preliminary-round group plays the fourth-place team of the other group, while the second-place team plays the third-place team of the other group. 1A-4B, 2A-3B, 1B-4A, 2B-3A. The winning teams advance to the semi-finals. also rules for relegation The 8th ranked teams of both groups will be relegated to the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division I Group A. but remember that this year we have an exception. If the co-hosts for the next years 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship (Germany and France) end up in positions 7 and 8 in Group B during the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, only one team will be relegated – the 8th-ranked team of Group A – and only the winner of the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division I Group A will be promoted. If one of the co-hosted teams for the next years 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship (Germany or France) end in 8th position, but the other co-host nation will end at worst 6th, the 7th ranked nation will be relegated.

  12. Canada too much for Belarus Duchene nets game winner Canada's Corey Perry #24 celebrates with Ryan O'Reilly #90, Derick Brassard #19, Matt Duchene #9 and Cody Ceci #5 after score the opening goal of the game during preliminary round action at the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey Championship. Canada keeps rolling with an impressive 8-0 win over Belarus. They are undefeated against Belarus in World Championship history. Canada remained undefeated at the 2016 IIHF World Championships with a 8-0 win over Belarus. Derick Brassard's first period goal stood up throughout as the game winner. Cam Talbot was strong in this his second start of the tournament. The Edmonton Oielrs netminder made 13 saves for his second win of the tournament and first shutout. Canada has now beaten Belarus in all nine games they have faced each other in World Championship play going back to 1998 and have shut them out in consecutive games in as many years. Last year as the Canadian juggernaut rolled through all ten teams they faced en route to gold, they defeated Belarus 9-0 in the quarterfinals. "There’s a lot of offense, there’s a lot of skill, there’s a lot of youth." Canada captain Corey Perry said. "I’ve said this since Day One: we’re excited to be here, put this jersey on, and play for our country." Both teams traded chances over the first twenty minutes. Canada created opportunities through a pileup of bodies in front of the Belarus net with Connor McDavid getting a few pokes at the puck but not able to convert. Alexei Kalyuzhny sent a slapshot that was stopped by Talbot’s pad. With 3:43 left in the first period, Canada struck. Brassard knocked in a Perry pass. Brassard’s quick release left Kevin Lalande almost helpless to stop the shot. Brassard’s second of the tournament came on the power play with defenseman Kristian Khenkel in the box for holding an opponent. Later in the period, Brassard almost had another but his shot hit the crossbar. In the second Canada scored four goals in two flurries. Their first two goals in the period came almost three minutes apart and their final two exactly twenty seconds apart. Perry scored at 1:03 of the second period. Ryan Murray deftly stripped the puck from Belarus forward Andrei Stas and sent an outlet pass up the ice to Perry who took it in and scored. With Brendan Gallagher sitting in the penalty box for slashing, Belarus tried to gain the Canadian zone but could not keep the puck in. Brody Jenner then led a two-on-one Jenner with Ryan O’Reilly. Jenner’s pass hit O’Reilly’s skate in stride and went in the net. The play was reviewed and ruled a goal. O’Reilly did not kick the puck into the net. Matt Duchene and Taylor Hall scored twenty seconds apart to make it 5-0. Hall’s goal was set up by McDavid who cycled the puck, drew three defenders before sending a nifty pass to Hall to shoot into a wide open net. Hall’s goal chased Lalande from the game and he was replaced with Dmitri Milchakov. "It’s the way they carry themselves in the offensive zone that, for me, is the most impressive, the way they hold on to the puck and find the little openings to make plays." Belarus skater Charles Linglet said. "It always seems like the puck lands on their sticks no matter what they try." Early in the game, Belarus was much more disciplined than they were in their previous game but once Canada opened things up in the second they became undisciplined again taking three minors. Duchene's score came on the power play. Of course, Brad Marchand helped, spending most of the game trying his level best to get under their collective skin. O'Reilly added his second of the game in the third and Mark Stone and Michael Matheson finished the scoring for an 8-0 lead. Mark Scheifele had two assists in the period. Canada is clicking now and line combinations are solidifying. They are still working things out, as are most teams, but the thought of Canada getting much better than this is a scary proposition for opponents the rest of the way through this tournament. "It’s two different teams." O'Reilly said compaying this Team Canada to last year. "There are a few of us here who were here last year. Last year we were a more mature, older team. This year, I think we’re a little younger. We have to use our speed and be relentless with our possession of the puck."

  14. Panarin paces 4-0 win Bobrovski Victory Day hero for third time Latvia's Elvis Merzlikins #30 makes the save against Russia's Yevgeni Dadonov #63 during preliminary round action at the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey Championship. Russia improved its all-time Victory Day record to 10-4 with an impressive 4-0 win over Latvia this afternoon. Artemi Panarin had two goals and two assists. Sergei Bobrovski was letter perfect when he had to be in the Rusisan net, stopping all 27 shots. More incredibly, this is his third straight shutout for Russia on May 9. Odd-man situations were also critical to the result. Latvia had nearly 12 minutes of power-play time, including more than threre minutes in total of 5-on-3, but couldn't put a sinlge puck past Bobrovski. The game was marked by sensational goaltending at both ends, particularly in the Latvian cage where Elvis Merzlikins was, for the most part, sensational in facing 37 shots. Indeed, the first period was scoreless only because of Elvis, who stopped all 13 shots he faced. It wasn’t such smooth sailing in the second, though. The Russians came out with even greater speed and scored just 29 seconds in when Panarin’s bad-angle shot beat Merzlikins, his one gaffe on the night. Panarin was the central figure of the other goal in the period some seven minutes later. He checked a lax Kristaps Sotnieks behind the Latvian goal and started a great three-way passing play. In the blink of an eye the puck went from Panarin behind the goal to Vadim Shipachyov to the side of the net to Yevgeni Dadonov. Dadonov had the open net and didn’t miss. Merzlikins stoned Panarin midway through the period on a clean breakaway, and Latvia had a great chance to get back in the gate late in the period when Alexei Yemelin was given a major penalty for tripping and a game misconduct for a knee-on-knee check on Miks Indrasis, who was helped off the ice by the trainer (but returned in the third). Try as they might, though, the Latvians couldn’t beat Sergei Bobrovski, who was sensational when he had to be. In fact, during that five-minute advantage the Russians took another penalty, but even with a two-man advantage for 75 seconds, the Latvians came up empty. It was another gorgeous three-way play that made it 3-0 at 7:02 of the final period. Panarin whipped a pass from the corner to Dadonov, and with equal speed Dadonov sent the puck to the net where Shipachyov made a clever re-direct of the puck past a helpless Merzlikins. A minute later, it appeared that Sergei Mozyakin had made it 4-0, but video review determined he kicked the puck in. Panarin got his second of the game at 17:30 on a power play, again after a nice pass that gave him the open side of the net.
