  12. well, I do not know anything about USA winning a quota in womens K1 even ICF still did not announced, as expected, nothing.. but I think it´s only a national trials for nominations into the national team for the season 2016. Usually many nations has this system of trials each year (Slovakia too) there 2-3 races in which the athletes won points and the best 3 are nominated in the National team for the whole season, they will start in world cups races, continental champs, world champs etc... so I assume USA canoe/Kayak merged both trials (for OG and for NT) in the same race. but that´s only what I´m thinking. not 100% sure. but thats the way how the different teams select the racers. and assuming USA has not quota in W K1 I think it´s the reason.

  20. Swiss recover to win No shootout? No overtime? No problem! Switzerland's Dino Wieser #56 looks for a scoring chance against Latvia's Edgars Masalskis #31 during preliminary round action at the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. Switzerland blew leads of 3-0 and 4-3, but an Eric Blum goal at 18:31 of the third period broke a 4-4 tie with Latvia and gave the Swiss a dramatic win. Blum controlled a poor clearing effort by Roberts Bukarts and then fired a quick point shot that went all the way, fooling Latvian goaltender Edgars Masalskis and giving the Swiss their second win in a row. The result puts the Swiss right back in the thick of playoff possibility. They now have seven points and move into second place in Group A standings (although they have played one more game than all other teams at this moment). After three games that went to overtime or a shootout, this was their first regulation game in Moscow. The loss leaves Latvia in last place tied with Kazakhstan. Each team has just two points but the Kazakhs have a game in hand. "Today was the first game where we really got started," noted Swiss captain Andres Ambuhl. "We played pretty good early on, but then we lost that 3-0 lead. Still we had enough to win it and get our first three points of the tournament, so we're pretty happy with that." What started out as a clumsy and slow game turned into unpredictable mayhem in the second period when teams combined equally for six goals, the most in any one period so far at this year’s World Championship. Nine Niederreiter started the fireworks simply enough. Stationed in the middle of a four-man Latvian box during a Swiss power play, he re-directed a nice pass from Sven Andrighetto over the glove of Masalskis at 3:33. Two and a half minutes later, "El Nino" struck again. This time he corralled a rebound off a Felicien du Bois shot and fired quickly, the puck squeaking through Masalskis’s pads. The Swiss took control of the game at 8:30 when Andrighetto’s pass in front caromed off the skate of Gregory Hofmann. Video review confirmed there was no distinct kicking motion, and so the Swiss were up 3-0 and looking strong. But they couldn’t maintain their composure and took penalties that cost them dearly. Kristaps Sotnieks took a point shot deflected in front by Mikelis Redlihs at 13:24 to make it 3-1. Four minutes later, on another man advantage, another Sotnieks point shot led to a goal. Berra made the save, but Redlihs was right there to snap home the loose puck. To complete the craziness, Ronalds Kenins came don the right wing and fired a pass in front, only to see the puck deflected by Swiss forward Morris Trachsler behind his own goalie at 18:36. A game that started slowly veered sharply in the Swiss direction, was now tied, 3-3 after 40 minutes. Andrighetto gave the Swiss another lead at 5:56 of the third when he came off the boards and fired a quick shot from the top of the faceoff circle that caught Masalskis by surprise. That lead lasted all of 26 seconds before a harmless-looking shot by Guntis Galvins was tipped en route to the net by Aleksejs Sirokovs, beating Berra and making it a 4-4 game and setting the stage for Blum's dramatics. Switzerland now enjoys two days off before playing Russia on Saturday while the Latvians have one day off before a critical encounter with Denmark.

  22. Belarus shocks Slovakia Four third period goals seal win Belarus' Andrei Stepanov #61 celebrates after scoring the game winning goal during preliminary round action at the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. Down 2-0, Belarus comes back with four goals in the third period to defeat Slovakia for its first win of 2016 tournament. Belarus came back from a two goal deficit to score four unanswered goals and defeat Slovakia 4-2 at Yubileiny Arena. Andrei Stepanov’s third period goal gave Belarus its first lead of the game and one it would not relinquish. It was their first win of the tournament in four tries. Coming into this afternoon, Belarus scored the second fewest goals at these World Championships and given up the most goals against. This game represented a big improvement in that Belarus put forward its best defensive effort to date. Belarus also offered a forecheck, offense creativity, solid goaltending, and timely scoring. Yesterday, Slovakia did not play well, losing 5-1 to Germany. The loss was significant enough that it prompted head coach Zdeno Ciger to call out his team in the post game press conference. “After this loss, I hope the team wakes up and starts to play disciplined and as a team again. I hope next game is a totally different game.” Different team, sure, but another loss. After winning their first two games of the 2016 World Championships, Slovakia is now in free fall having lost its last two. "We played two good periods and then suddenly I don’t know – it’s like a different team out there." Said a bewildered Sekera. "It’s a young, inexperienced team that has to pay for it. Guys need to learn that we need to play 60 minutes, not 40." In the first period, Slovakia allowed Belarus a two-man advantage. Goaltender Julius Hudacek was called for delay of game and Tomas Marcinko for tripping to allow the Belarus power play, ranked 12th out of 16 in this tournament, a chance at scoring. Slovakia would kill these off with relative easy, demonstrating why they are tied for the third best penalty kill at this World Championship. Despite a scoreless first, two penalties to end the period would prove crucial in getting Slovakia on the scoreboard. Geoff Platt and Roman Dyukov were both sent off for slashing at 19:21 and 30:00 respectively. With the two-man advantage to start the second, Slovakia wasted no time in taking the lead. As he has in previous games, Andrej Sekera scored from the point. He whizzed a slapshot on net that went low and beneath Vitali Koval’s left pad at :47 of the middle frame. At 16:26 Tomas Jurco tipped Juraj Mikus wrist shot and Slovakia was up 2-0 and comfortably in the driver’s seat. Or so it seemed. Early in the third Belarus cut the lead in half when Kiril Gotovets put a shot on net that was mishandled by Julius Hudacek and then in the net. "Certainly that first goal built so much momentum for us, just to get us on the board." Platt said. "And then the floodgates opened for us, because we felt we could play. We didn’t sit back at all, which is really important. The confidence just built. That’s sport and that’s momentum. That happens, you know?" In a frightening moment, Michal Sersen suffered an injury that required he be wheeled off on a stretcher in the third period. With the score still 2-1 Slovakia, the tone and tenor of the game changed after Sersen’s injury. Belarus continued to press for a tie and got it when Artur Gavrus scored stick side to even the contest at two. It was a new game and Belarus was surging. Slovakia, on the other hand, was back on their heels. Gotovets and Yevgeni Kovyrshin picked up assists. Stepanov then gave Belarus its first lead, which further excited the largely pro-Belarus crowd. Stepanov raced down the wing with the option to pass or shoot, opting to shoot. Ciger tried to calm his team down by calling a timeout but it did not help. Charles Linglet added his team’s fourth goal. For Linglet, it was his first ever World Championship taking a pass from Platt and going far side. Belarus scored on four of its ten shots in the period. After three subpar performances, Belarus found their game in the third period and now hope to carry the momentum when they face Germany. "You know, I watched that game [between Germany and Slovakia] and I can’t say I was surprised by the Germans’ level, but I was impressed more than anything." Platt offered. "We obviously took them very seriously before, but seeing the performance they put in against Slovakia, now we know the level we’re going to face and we have to respect that tremendously. They’re a club like us that’s looking to jump up rather than go backwards."
