I just came across a series of international high school student discussions/debates held in the 1950s on American television. I’ve only watched the video linked below so far, but it’s a fascinating window into the geopolitical debates of the time. This discussion features students from and starts with general thoughts about America and the experience. They then get into some more “juicy” issues like Italy and Ethiopia’s relationship and what students in both countries are taught at the time, Ethiopia’s ethnic divide, and South Africa’s policy of apartheid. The discussion is held completely in English, and there’s subtitles available as well.

Yeah, I’d argue we should institute a modified DNF in that case. The team receives no points for the leg, but they are allowed to remain in the competition and accumulate points in the other legs. Here’s a breakdown of how points would be allocated relative to ranking in the first three legs: 1st - 50 2nd - 45 3rd - 40 4th - 35 5th - 30 6th - 25 7th - 20 8th - 15 9th - 10 10th - 5 Getting awarded zero points for a leg DNF isn’t too harsh a penalty for the bottom ranked teams, while they also get a slightly larger handicap to reward the top teams.

Alright, time for one of my crazy suggestions. For this year’s team trophy I propose a modified omnium consisting a four legs. Leg 1 (10 jury votes) - Scratch Race: Teams are rewarded for total points accumulated by randomly selected representative (different nation for each leg) during this leg. Omnium points are then awarded based on the ranking. 1st Place = 50 points, 2nd Place = 45 points, 3rd Place = 40 points, 4th Place = 35 points, and so on by decreasing intervals of five points. Leg 2 (10 jury votes) - Frequency Contest: Teams are rewarded for the amount of times they are awarded points by national juries. The amount points does not matter*, only the total number of juries that give the randomly selected representative points over this leg. A perfect leg would see a team’s representative earn the points from all 10 juries for example. A ranking will be created based on frequency of scoring. Omnium points are then awarded based on that ranking. 1st Place = 50 points, 2nd Place = 45 points, 3rd Place = 40 points, 4th Place = 35 points, and so on by decreasing intervals of five points. *= Since there’s a heightened possibility of ties in this leg, points would be used as the tiebreaker. First tiebreaker would be number of 12 points awarded to each jury. Second, would be the number of 11 points awarded to each jury, and so on until we get to the number 1 points awarded to each jury. Leg 3 (11 jury votes) - Elimination Race: Teams are rewarded for the running total points accumulated by randomly selected representative over this leg. The first elimination would occur after the third jury vote in this leg. At that point, the representative with the lowest total leg score would be eliminated and finish the leg in 10th place. An elimination would then take place after each subsequent jury vote. There would only be two representatives left at the end of leg, at which point the representative with the highest total points would be awarded victory. Omnium points would then be awarded based off the final ranking, 1st Place = 50 points, 2nd Place = 45 points, 3rd Place = 40 points, 4th Place = 35 points, and so on by decreasing intervals of five points. *= In case there are multiple teams with no points after the third leg, those teams are all eliminated at that point (with subsequent eliminations being delayed until the number of remaining competitors catches up to the original formula), with the tiebreaker being total points at the end of the leg. Leg 4 (10 jury votes) - Points Race: Teams are given the total amount of points earned by their randomly selected representative over this stage. The points earned by that representative are then added to the team’s omnium total for their final score. Final rankings are determined by the total points earned by each team after the four legs. Thoughts?

Track cycling quotas from the South American Games* Women: - 9 riders (team sprint, team pursuit, madison), - 2 riders (sprint, keirin), - 1 rider (omnium) Men: - 7 riders (team sprint, team pursuit), - 2 riders (madison) The individual event quotas get a little tricky on the men’s side due to the following clause in the qualification system, “The countries that qualify in teams are not entitled to qualify additional quotas for individual events, but they may compete in the individual events of the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.” I’m not sure how to interpret this. For instance, is Argentina still entitled to their omnium quota since they haven’t qualified in all team events, or does their qualification in the madison make them ineligible for that quota? In the end, has likely qualified 7-9 riders, and 2-5 riders. might pick up 2 riders (sprint, keirin) if Colombia and Argentina aren’t eligible for those spots, while might get a quota in the omnium for similar reasons. This is all before the Pan Am Champs as well, where countries could presumably earn team quotas and complicate these allocations further. The reallocation rules aren’t that clear on event priority. For instance, if Argentina wins a women’s team quota(s) at that event, are their quotas from the South American Games reallocated to the next best country at these Games, or to the best placed unqualified nation at the Pan Am Champs? If the they go to the next best country at the South American Games, has an opportunity to qualify in women’s keirin assuming qualify in team events.
