In road cycling I like time trials as well. These things boil down to the pure essence of sports: a person battling against him/herself, the elements and the clock.

Fourcade opening the bindings of both Peiffer and Desthieux who were face down in the snow. One of the big things I like about biathlon and cross-country skiing, athletes who are back on their feet who open the bindings of some (sometimes random) other athlete who's still lying in the snow, catching their breath.

But as a long-time fan, it is fun to see a few people battle it out lap after lap after lap, even if they are the same. As long as there are people cheering them on, that is, it's a whole lot less fun when they're at some dead rink in Kazakhstan or something. There aren't that many events in general where you've got tons of people with real chances anyway.

It's the non-speed skating fan in you talking. I find a snooker match incredibly boring, but that's just because I'm not a snooker fan in general, while fans love matches I find boring. People who can't appreciate some of the more epic battles in the 10k are the same kind of people who want the 50k race walk gone for example, they need 'fast and furious' instead of epic. The best races I've seen are all at least 1500 meters, most are 5k's and 10k's. A 500m is just way too short to really get into it.
