Because they were preparing at their home track (exactly, the Olympic one). That plus the fact they won the World Cup two years ago (not a World Cup, the World Cup, the standings) makes them a serious threat. -
And men's bobsleigh. Well, biathlon makes perfect sense to have at the best possible time for Europe. So does luge. Actually only women's bobsleigh could have been earlier on the day.

The very first halfpipe qualifying run by the first athlete was more fun than the entire slopestyle final combined.

Women's snowboarding slopestyle. Absolutely horrendous conditions (wind) leading to barely anyone getting any kind of half-decent run in, but they just let it all continue. And that's apart from the 2-run final.
