  3. well, Brazil has also a good male fencer (Foil) in Guilherme Toldo, who also made the top 10 in Rio and in a few world cup events... however, on a given day there are so many athletes and Countries that could win a medal, especially in the Epee events... other Countries with a good overall team? Japan first of all then Poland and Estonia have good chances in the women's team epee... Netherlands, Denmark, Cuba and Venezuela in the men's Epee... Egypt in the men's Foil, Tunisia in all the women's events... Canada also have some very good female athletes (and yesterday they were also close to a surprising medal in the men's Sabre)... the same Argentina until 20 years ago couln't even imagine to qualify an athelte for the main draw (last 64) of a world championship...now you have at least 3 or 4 fencers regularly doing the main draw at the global events... a few years ago, you could cry of joy if you had 1 or 2 Nations other than ITA, FRA, HUN, URS and the 2 GER teams in the medal table (actually, in the top 10 of each competition) and 30 Nations at the start of the world champs...nowadays, there are at least 20/25 Countries who have at least an outside chance to win a medal and more than 100 Nations starting at the world champs...yes, Fencing has really grown up a lot in the last 20 years...
  4. OMG! frankly, WKF should take the status of OQR tournament away from this one and force AKF to act properly... something like that it's absolutely unacceptable... and then they cry because they've been axed from the future Olympic Games already before having their official debut... if you allow things like that to happen...
  5. finally, just a few stats... only on day 1, we already have 8 Nations coming from 3 different Continents in the medal table... in the men's Sabre we had 8 men from 8 different Countries in the quarterfinals and in the women's Epee 8 girls from 7 different Countries at the same stage... in both competitions, the no. 1 seed couldn't even make the podium... this shows how the sport of Fencing has grown in the last few years...now we can really say it's a true global discipline and one of the most widely spread all around the world (at least for what concerns the top level of play)... the time when it was the home garden of the usual 4/5 powerhouses has long gone...
  6. Men's Individual Sabre Gold: Oh Sanguk Silver: Andras Szatmari Bronze: Mojtaba Abedini & Luca Curatoli Semifinals Szatmari b. Abedini 15-8 Oh b. Curatoli 15-11 Gold Medal Match Oh b. Szatmari 15-12 Full Ranking (and Results) here: https://2019budapestfencing.com/files/hunfencing/2019_wfc_bud/sms-in/index.php?page=clasfinal.htm
  7. well, she was born in Milan (ITA) in 1985... her dad was the son of the at the time German General Consul in Italy, meanwhile her mom is the fashion designer Valeria Ferlini (Brazilian with clear Italian heritage)... as both her parents were living and working in Milan, she grew up in Italy and she used to be one of our best specialists... with our team she won 1 Gold (team) and 2 Bronze (1 individual and 1 team) medals at the world champs and the same did at the European champs (1 Gold and 1 Silver medal with the team, 1 individual bronze) between 2005 and 2012... after the London Games, she decided to stop her fencing career, but then the Brazilian federation convinced her to come back with their team, as the Rio Olympics were approaching (and since she wasn't anymore in our team, she happily accepted to represent her mom's Country)... with Brazil she immediately won the Pan-American champs in 2015, then she made the quarterfinals at the Rio Games and now it's the apotheosis of her career... currently (since quite a few years) she lives and trains in Paris with the great French maestro Le Vavasseur (the man on the bench behind her in the final assault earlier today)... on a personal side, she's a very lively girl and an artist (just look at her personal website and instagram)... to be noticed, I heard from Youtube's broadcaster that she recently lost her father...so, the emotional scenes after her win are explained (when she took off her glove, I think she was kissing the name of her dad tattoed on her wrist)...
  8. Women's Individual Epee Gold: Nathalie Moellhausen Silver: Lin Sheng Bronze: Olena Kryvytska & Vivian Kong Man Wai Semifinals Lin b. Kryvytska 15-14 Moellhausen b. Kong 15-11 Gold Medal Match Moellhausen b. Lin 13-12 Full Ranking (and Results) here: https://2019budapestfencing.com/files/hunfencing/2019_wfc_bud/swe-in/index.php?page=clasfinal.htm
  9. Nathalie!!! I'm so, so happy that she finally won the individual Gold Medal...today she has really painted a masterpiece... on the men's side, impressive piece of mental strenght by Oh, who didn't lose his focus after an awful start in the final match and eventually completed a remarkable comeback... today he proved himself definitely the strongest in the field...well deserved gold medal for him... on the Italian side, we can only regret Moellhausen's decision to switch her Nationality...'cause our girls once again have been really disappointing, losing assaults that they should win with closed eyes... Curatoli's Bronze medal is only a small consolation...he could/should have done a bit better also against Oh...he was 9-7 ahead and then he just lost his mind too easily (and it happened many times also in the world cup events...after the break at the 8th hit, he often gives up a break to his opponents...that's a dangerous tendency that should be investigated by himself and his coaching staff)...
  10. do you mean at the Olympic Games? because we all know that it's not an Olympic sport, but they're actually part of the West Indies team in Cricket (even though not in this year's world cup) and they also have a decent football team (for the Central American/Caribbean standard, of course)...
  11. men's Sabre quarterfinals Andras Szatmari b. Eli Dershwitz 15-11 Mojtaba Abedini b. Max Hartung 15-11 Luca Curatoli b. Shaul Gordon 15-12 Oh Sanguk b. Konstantin Lokhanov 15-9 men's Sabre Semifinals Andras Szatmari vs Mojtaba Abedini Luca Curatoli vs Oh Sanguk the entire medal session is scheduled to start at 6.40 p.m. CET (women's Epee first to go)...
  12. and Abedini eliminates Hartung!!! medal for Iran!
  13. medal for Italy!!! and also the home side, despite losing their star so early, found the way to jump on the podium, thanks to a surprising Andras Szatmari, who upset the no.1 seeded Dershwitz...
  14. Korea were twice just 1 hit short of a medal...tonight they will go to sleep with a lot of regrets...
  15. women's Epee quarterfinals Olena Kryvytska b. Kang Young Mi 15-14 Lin Sheng b. Lee Hye In 11-10 Vivian Kong Man Wai b. Coraline Vitalis 15-9 Nathalie Moellhausen b. Lis Rottler-Fautsch 11-10 women's Epee Semifinals Olena Kryvytska vs Lin Sheng Vivian Kong Man Wai vs Nathalie Moellhausen
  16. Nathalie!!! very lucky escape from her, to be honest...
  17. yeah, I must have confused her with someone else from some other small Nation... however, she has a 7th place in a world cup event in 2017 and at the European champs 2017 in Tbilisi as her best results before today...
  18. she does train in Paris (where she actually lives right now)... actually I wrote before that she won an individual world Bronze medal and a few team medal (including 1 Gold) with Italy... she switched her Nationality because she wanted to be sure to take part in the Rio Games (as she is half Brazilian) and with the Italian team she didn't have any guarantee (with Fiamingo and Navarria in the squad, her only chance was with the team...but we were not going to qualify the full team...so she decided to go elsewhere)...
  19. men's Sabre quarterfinals Eli Dershwitz vs Andras Szatmari Mojtaba Abedini vs Max Hartung Shaul Gordon vs Luca Curatoli Konstantin Lokhanov vs Oh Sanguk
  20. women's Epee quarterfinals Olena Kryvytska vs Kang Young Mi Lee Hye In vs Lin Sheng Vivian Kong Man Wai vs Coraline Vitalis Nathalie Moellhausen vs Lis Rottler-Fautsch
  21. when I wrote that post, Samele was still there (then he lost to Oh)... and as I wrote before, Moellhausen now represents Brazil, but she's more Italian than Brazilian (she was born and raised here, even if her mom is Brazilian)...
  22. and finally Curatoli is the last man to reach the top 8...Bazadze is definitely not happy with the ref...
  23. Szatmari and Hartung also in the quarterfinals...only the match between Curatoli and Bazadze is still running (with the Georgian not playing fair, even if I have to say that a couple of hits against him have been judged not correctly)...
  24. and Samele is out...destroyed by Oh Sanguk...
  25. and Dershwitz is the 4th fencer to make the top 8 in the men's sabre... now it's time for the 2 "true" Italians left in the competition today...
