  1. The universality quotas are only awarded in the 100m, 800m and marathon. Additionally, in the 800m only a maximum of three athletes can qualify under universality.
  2. Besides Canada, are there a lot of other nations represented in the NFL?
  3. A team EU would utterly dominate the medal table. Looking at 2020, they would have won 89 events and then you have to consider combined teams would have upgraded their results to gold so I imagine an EU team would win over 100 events. Due to athlete limits per nations in events many silver and bronze medals would be up for grabs which will likely go to the remaining big nations. Many of Canada's 4th places would now be medals. With that said the IOC would probably let the EU nations compete separately (some kind of "Grandfather clause") the drop in competitiveness would wreck the Olympics.
  4. They probably didn't want to risk overlapping with the opening ceremony. Still they could have played three match tomorrow. Baseball might take a while, but you can fit three games in a day.
  5. Boxing is a huge wildcard since there haven't been that many competitions. It also depends on the draw. Back to Day -2. Baseball is the only sport on display. Too bad Canada failed to qualify. I'm hoping Chile keeps it competitive, but I am doubtful.
  6. The bigger question is whether the coaching staff is willing to punish Wiggins for his non-involvement. It's cutting your nose to spite the face vibe, but if he doesn't show up for any camps between now and the Olympics I think it's a possibility.
  7. The bronze medal in lacrosse is wide open, nations have five years to develop. This reminds me of women's ice hockey
  8. They might keep it this time since they are now a core team.
  9. Here's the direct Olympic qualification schedule. Overall up to 71 events will offer direct quotas to the Olympics (in archery, diving & tennis it depends on the results). I did not include trampoline since I am 99% sure we will qualify someone and thus the quota will be voided. All medal days except October 31st will offer quotas with October 23rd and November 4th offering quotas in 5 sports. 10. Semifinals are set v v Zambia got the upset against Madagascar
  11. Since we are talking about increasing quotas here's a look of my minimum quota increase for existing events. This was made under the principal that Olympic events should have 12 entrants for teams (3+ athletes) and 16 entrants for individuals/pairs. Two exceptions, synchronized diving and rowing eights were made as they do not justify an increase to 16 and 12 entrants and thus were only bumped up to 12 and 8 respectively. As I tried to keep the increases to a minimum some athlete quotas were doubled up (e.g. the increase in fencing teams will use an athlete from the individual event so only sees an overall increase of 2 per team). Aquatics (Artistic Swimming) - 12 Aquatics (Diving) - 16 Aquatics (Water Polo) - 22 Basketball (3x3) - 32 Canoeing (Sprint) - 28 Cycling (BMX Freestyle) - 8 Cycling (Track) - 40 Fencing - 48 Rowing - 90 Sport Climbing (Sprint) - 4 Weightlifting - 40 Total - 340 Clearly the IOC hates rowing, even holding the eights to 8 entrants they are missing quite a lot of athletes. Weightlifting is obviously being punished for its doping issues as it is missing by far the most individual/pair quotas. The 10,500 athlete quota was made under the 2016 program which included 306 events in 28 sports. 2024 will have 329 in 32 sports with only breaking (32 athletes) not being a core sport going into 2028. You can't increase the number events without increase the athlete quota. It's that simple.
  12. I don't think there's that many quotas to get rid of without getting rid of some events. Maybe reduce the men's football from 16 to 12 teams (that's already 72/144), but the IOC wouldn't want to lose that source of income. The hope would be that any addition of sports would see an increase in the overall athlete quota. If the current Olympic sport federations are smart they may push for something like 11,500 and then for 2032 try to get the overall athlete quota to 11,000 plus whatever Australia proposes.
  13. Strong rebound by Angola, just need a win or draw to qualify to the Olympics.
  14. Baseball/Softball (including women's baseball and men's softball). I'd like to see lacrosse, but as mentioned before it is definitely not Olympic ready. Maybe ice hockey so we can guarantee NHL players
  15. Group Stage is complete. The 3 remaining Brazilian men's teams are all in the same eighth bracket. At best only 1 will reach the quarterfinals.
  16. Exciting, though we will probably be the weakest nation at the World Cup
  17. I'm not 100% sure cricket will have its best players. There's a lot of hurdles in India and to a lesser extent the Caribbean nations.
  18. While it was a terrible idea initially, DanceSport did well in promoting breaking around the world. Given the number of competing nations it has gone from almost non-existent to one of the biggest non-Olympic event.
  19. Though one thing I must say, new sports must be added during the application process so nations can vote on it in the event of multiple host applications, not after the host has been awarded
  20. Demonstration sports were a thing for quite a while. I'm on the fence. For non-venue specific sports like karate or squash, a decision should be made one way or another, but for sports like baseball/softball and cricket where the venue is specific (and expensive) I don't mind them showing up every now and then. Like I don't expect Paris to host a baseball/softball tournament.
  21. Lacrosse is great to watch, but the sport is less developed worldwide than flag football
  22. Good luck to Cuba in the VNL. Serbia is technically reachable, but like Canada in the women they are going to need to defeat a few top teams.
