  1. I'm going to have to agree along with in rowing. These are sport federation approved athletes in qualification position. Whether the IOC allows Russia/Belarus to compete is beyond the scope of this thread and if they are completely banned I would remove them regardless since they wouldn't be able to qualify. In regards to individual athletes potentially losing their "qualifying ability" due to their support of the war I see it as no different than an athlete being later found out to be doping and thus losing the quota (in fact for 2020 I remember I had to re-add a nation to the list due to a doping violation)
  2. I think it's pretty clear the UWW will accept them since they allowed them to compete. The IOC may step in, but I feel it'll be an all or nothing (full ban or allow the sport federations to decide) situation.
  3. She formally competed for but decided to compete for her father's home nation. Not without France almost costing her a spot at the Olympics because they refused to release her. A report detailing the federation's abuse of its athletes paved the way for her to compete at the African Championships and now she's allowed to compete at the World Championships. She should grab the Olympic quota quite easily and she's a potential medal threat in the women's uneven bars and balance beam
  4. I think you have been misunderstanding the rules. It would be easier to understand if you treat AIN like the refugee team. I think that tweet confirms UWW will accept the quota unless the IOC completely bans Russia/Belarus. World Rowing was probably taking a more cautious approach.
  5. Correct it goes to the next highest ranked athlete in the respective event unless the event has less than 8 entrants then it will be transferred to a tripartite quota.
  6. Canada finished a top of Group A and qualified to the quarterfinals
  7. Watch defeat at the Oceania championships just to throw more chaos into the final tournament.
  8. I don't like that continental spots are decided by world rankings. It worked out for the women's, but for the men's Tunisia will end up representing Africa despite finishing 5th at the most recent African Championships. Unfortunately the lesser teams don't get enough exposure so their ranking positions don't change as quickly. Field hockey has the correct format to ensure the top teams are represented. Continental qualifiers first then world qualifiers for the remaining teams.
  9. Pretty standard results, the top 4 nations reached the semis and the two best are in the final.
  10. Probably because we have two team quotas. It's to prevent the top two teams from meeting in the semis and then getting eliminated. Of course with v in the men's quarterfinals the whole exercise is ruined
  11. The final women's round robin will be between I know we use to be two continents, but I think it's weird that we still got two team quotas. Even in 2028 we will have at least two Pan American nations since the United States will be hosts.
  12. Good start for Canada. If we can get the win tomorrow against the Dominican Republic then we are looking good to meet our objective of maximizing our world ranking points.
  13. Argentina have also been given an invite to replace Colombia. They too may want to focus on the Pan American Games
  14. That's what happens when you cut quotas. Setting judging and governance issues aside, boxing is still one of the more played sports. Quotas should really average 24 entrants with the heaviest weights getting less and the middling weights getting more.
  15. Here's the nation breakdown going into the quarterfinals - 11 - 8 - 8 - 8 - 7 - 6 - 6 - 6 - 6 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1
  16. Depends on the qualifying groups. and will be in Pot 4 (assuming and make the tournament), but I'd give them a good chance against the Pot 3 teams: . To guarantee an African team and will be in the same group.
  17. It's been like this for a decade now, they rule with an iron fist, quashing any dissident.
  18. Looking at the final Olympic tournament, will likely be the top seeds. Despite their performance here I don't think got enough points to surpass so they will be a third seed and probably be part of the group of death.
  19. The following nations are not eligible to compete in their respective continental qualifiers: Africa: None Asia-Oceania: Europe: Pan America: The following may compete in their respective continental qualifier, but may qualify only one boat (two if they both finish first) Africa: Asia-Oceania: Europe: Pan America: Everyone else can compete and qualify up to two boats.
  20. Third place on the medal table is a great showing. Hope this translates to the senior level in the future
  21. Funny enough, if Canada fails to grab the women's eights quota they will be eligible for the Pan American regatta. They won't do this, but if they intentionally drop the quota they can easily grab the men's single sculls quota (maybe even a second with the women's 1x or men's L2x should they send a boat) and then grab the eights boat (and potentially others) in the final qualifiers. Again playing with fire with a potential medal contender...
  22. The full European regatta. Basically, all nations with two or more qualified boats are banned. Nations with only one qualified boat may compete, but can only qualify one boat (unless they win gold in 2+ events then they can qualify two). Nations with no qualified boats may compete and can qualify up to two boats.
  23. I know. It just defeats the point of "this sport is unique and played by a bunch of non-typical nations" when an 8-team tournament will likely contain . A 12-team tournament increases the chances of multiple of and a second Caribbean nation to qualify (also would be guaranteed a spot now) But yes any team sport will probably have 6-8 teams.
  24. That's the risk of having an 8-team cricket tournament. India isn't guaranteed to qualify, though they would be the favourites. A 12-team tournament will likely prevent the issue and also qualifies more South Asian nations which helps showcase the difference of the sport. We just need to get around those pesky athlete quotas.
