  1. 1:43.17, world leading time this year (though it seems like a bit of a soft WL time to me).
  2. Huge upset alert: Donavan Brazier, the world champion in the 800m, finished eighth at the US Olympic trials and will not be in Tokyo.
  3. Canadian Olympic trials, day 3 Women's 800m Free Summer McIntosh - 8:29.48 Men's 1500m Free - no automatic qualifier Women's 200m IM Sydney Pickrem - 2:09.24 Kelsey Wog - 2:10.21 Men's 200m IM Finlay Knox - 1:58.07 Women's 50m Free Kayla Sanchez - 24.66 Men's 50m Free Brent Hayden - 21.80 Joshua Liendo - 21.90 Really happy to see Hayden’s comeback pay off. I don’t think he has a realistic chance to medal in Tokyo unless the mixed medley relay does something special but it will be nice for the team to have him around.
  4. This is now a moot point given she qualified for the 50m. Summer McIntosh didn’t have a super impressive 800m but it was more than enough to qualify. Brent Hayden qualifying is a big highlight for me. Nice to see his comeback work out.
  5. I would really not count on Karate being in the program for 2028 or 2032 unless it becomes a permanent sport (not impossible some existing sports get removed after 2024). Hard to imagine LA and Brisbane won’t recommend Skateboarding and Surfing, and that doesn’t leave a lot of room.
  6. The US is going to win this by a Russia in Artistic Swimming style margin.
  7. I think it’s pretty obvious that the rules for when and how trans athletes should be able to compete are still a work in progress, but presumably issues will be addressed as they come up. Hubbard is competing in a really weak event, women’s weightlifting is a pretty niche sport and there are just not that many cis woman who are big enough for her weight class, so I’m not sure we can draw a ton of generalizable conclusions from her example.
  8. Y’all need to chill a little. Even if two thirds of the top 32 from both gender withdrew tennis would still provide more star power than most other Olympic sport. The Olympics need tennis more than the other way around.
  9. Correct. https://diving.ca/diving-plongeon-canada-announces-format-and-competition-details-for-the-2021-canadian-diving-trials/
  10. Yes, Olympic trials are only being held for individual events.
  11. Rory is also and , apparently. Quite an impressive collection of passports.
  12. I mean whether or not it's a good rule isn't the point, the point is that winning an Olympic medal in weightlifting isn't at all an indication that you are a top three lifter in the world.
  13. And she’d have even less of a chance if China could send more than one lifter or if North Korea was competing.
  14. She does, though like many other weightlifter she only has a decent chance because so many lifters that would probably beat her aren't going to be there because *gestures at weightlifting in general*.
  15. Can't wait for her finishing like seventh to be the biggest story of the games among some certain media outlets ?
  16. I would guess they take Sanchez for the relay either way - McIntosh and Oleksiak are both going to have heavy schedules and there is absolutely no reason for either of them to swim the heats in that relay. The women's 4x200m ain't that deep.
  17. Simone Manuel made the US team at the very last moment, winning the women's 50 free.
  18. I had actually written down something along the line of "of course the US will win a medal day 1" but then I looked at the schedule to make sure and, ya. Day 1 is probably going to be the worst day for team USA.
  19. We’ll have a better idea after they hold the women’s 100m free at trials, but Australia really looks like a lock. Ruck looks out of form right now.
  20. The world record holder and defending world champion in the 200m backstroke, Reagan Smith, failed to qualify in that event. She was third at the US trials.
  21. Summer McIntosh's coach is looking pretty smart now not making her swim the 400m at trials. Swimming Canada will almost certainly send her and Emily Overholt in that event. Kylie Masse is looking like a real contender again.
  22. Masse dropped a 57.70s at trials, 0.4s faster than her previous Canadian record. Second best time this year.
  23. Good to see a Canadian record from Santo Condorelli being broken. Gotta say, after watching every final sessions from the US and Australian Olympic swimming trials, the Canadian trials seem like an extremely amateur production in comparison. Not surprising (the only Canadian Olympic trials that are an impressive TV production are the ones for curling) but still. I guess I should be happy there is a decent live stream at all.
