  1. I think it's more a combination of luck (there is a lot of variance in hockey) and a bunch of players who really gelled and played better than the sum of their parts. On paper Canada wasn't anywhere near the best team in the tournament. Very weird to win the Hockey worlds in what is, unquestionably, a big upset.
  2. Good thing we had the UQOT, otherwise may not have had any athletes at the Olympics.
  3. I don't care that they won, I stand by my assessment that this is the worst team Canada has sent to Worlds in the NHL era :P
  4. Peng Peng Lee is MCing at US nationals. Nice to see her still active in the sport after her great (but very injury affected) collegial career.
  5. I don't believe so. Japan is no longer eligible to get a quota from the 2019 World Surfing games since they have a quota from the first priority (WSL) and are guaranteed a quota from the second priority (2021 World Surfing games).
  6. lost to 6-5, so is out of the running for the final qualification tournament. in with a win, not sure what the tie-break situation looks like if wins.
  7. Ya, not saying they aren’t French, just saying they aren’t geographically from Europe. The fact that Thaiti and Reunion are French doesn’t mean they are in Europe (just like Hawaii isn’t in the Americas despite being in the USA).
  8. Baseball was 1/8 in 2008, and even then the European qualifier had many players from the Americas. Just like many of the French surfers come from Oceania, not Europe.
  9. I may be wrong but I believe the four athletes who will advance from women’s round 5 are guaranteed a top 6 and an Olympic quota.
  10. Qualification situation for the women: Round 5 (guaranteed top 12): x2 (If she qualifies here the Pan-am quota goes to ) Repêchage round 7 (guaranteed top 16): (If she qualifies quota goes to ) x2 (cannot qualify) (only one French athlete can qualify) (cannot qualify) Not sure who the Asian quota goes to if Japan qualifies two quotas here.
  11. Gilmore is one of the best surfer to watch. As a neutral I would love to see her win in Tokyo.
  12. Bethany Zelasko narrowly stays alive with a last minute attempt. Got to feel bad for Carolina Mendes who lost out after the buzzer to both Zelasko and the already qualified Stephanie Gilmore’s amazing final wave.
  13. There is a competitor names "Lancelot Proton de la Chapelle" O.o
  14. Ya, watched a repechage heat that I thought was part of the main round.
  15. and are the only two unqualified countries left in the men’s main round, though also has two surfers in the main round that could override their continental quota (which would give a quota).
  16. I’ll be attending the final two days of the US championships this week-end. Very excited to get the chance to see Simone Biles compete in person.
  17. Really easy to manipulate the ten-must system…
  18. Well I wasn't expecting this Canadian team to make the semis...
  19. Nice to see w aren't the only ones confused about this.
  20. Slopestyle athletes and big air athletes qualify from a combined ranking list - you either qualify for both events or neither.
  21. It doesn't include China. I think 7-9 teams is realistically what we could have expected anyway. Teams who are currently in position to qualify for team aerials are . The big missing piece other than China is Australia since they currently have no elite male jumper. Canada currently has four athletes in qualifying position in all freestyle events, so as usual internal qualification will be brutal. Luckily the max number of athletes per country is 32 (up from 30 in 2018) so we are only looking at giving up eight quotas.
  22. beat 13-3. stays alive and is out. beat 5-0. The and start the final round 1-0, and are 0-1.
  23. beat 6-5. and advance to the final round. Their game tomorrow will determine who goes in with a 1-0 and 0-1 record. This is the end of an era. After agonizingly losing two back-to-back games 6-5, in both cases almost coming back to tie in the 9th inning, Cuba is eliminated. This is the first time that Cuba fails to make an Olympic final in Baseball, let alone qualify.
