  1. 25 year old McCartney Kessler - a former NCAA product - who only made Top 100 two weeks ago wins her first WTA title in Cleveland over Beatriz Haddad Maia. Kessler hasn't won a WTA tour match in her entire career before this week (one win at Australian Open which is ITF event). She also won Landisville 100k which earned her a MD wild card to US Open where she plays Marta Kostyuk in R1.
  2. Daria Pikulik said she will take a two year break from track cycling and *maybe* decides to return after that IF the situation in our cycling federation gets better (hint: it probably won't). She will focus on road racing going forward. https://infosport.pl/aktualnosci-2024-sport-zawodowy/kolarstwo/daria-pikulik-zrywa-z-kolarstwem-torowym-winny-zwiazek
  3. It's like the old joke about sports newspapers in Denmark. 9 pages about handball and 3 pages for everything else. A former football keeper once told that story in Polish press, they won some big game and he thought it would be on the first page but it wasn't because it was all handball
  4. Trude Dybendahl (cross country skiing) passed away at the age of 58.
  5. Ons Jabeur had the audacity to withdraw 2 hours after main draw was published
  6. They probably wanted to avoid Muslim outrage in a country where terrorist attacks are quite common compared to the mean
  7. I live 10 kms from Chorzów. I speak Silesian for 30+ years but it's a mixed dialect of Polish & German tbh. It's been declared a language for political purpose only. Funnily enough some years after the Silesian Autonomous Party has completely lost meaning in the voivodeship council. It was a much hotter topic in mid 00s to mid 10s
  8. Looks like had their big welcome party yesterday
  9. Must be the shortest silent ban in tennis history. Clostebol is the same thing Dorota Borowska got provisionally suspended for before the Olympics before it was revoked (so the massage cream for her dog).
  10. Silesia is obviously the region and the meeting is in Chorzów I presume that name Silesia is easier to pronounce so that's why they advert it like that.
  11. No dobra, przecież systemu nie zmienimy.
  12. I guess not everyone uses the screen at default 100% width setting. I also use some websites at 80% or 90% width for better reading. I use TO in 100% and the sidebar isn't a major distraction for me (on my laptop, I don't use my phone for that).
  13. Sadly her biggest chance was in Rio where she should have went with the Dutch break but didn't react and stayed with Deignan which was a big mistake. Even 8 years ago it was clear Holland is the team to stick with in these kind of situations.
  14. Ridiculous populism sausage from PM Tusk. Can't take it seriously whatsoever
  15. Anastazja Kuś has been withdrawn from the Polish squad. Doing European U-18 and Olympics in space of four weeks was arguably enough according to the coaches.
  16. This is truly a wishful thinking of a thread. Like @Josh said, I'm glad none of you are IOC members
  17. Zhang Shuai using her PR to beat Vince Spadea's legendary losing streak record Zhang still has one or two PR left before she finally won't be allowed to even make 250 qualies on her current ranking. But she turns 36 in January so I expect her to retire once those PR finally end. She's only collecting GS and 1000 pay checks now.
  18. Węgry już całe dekady temu postawili na sport niszowy czyli kajakarstwo i koszą tam worek medali. Polska nie ma takiego luksusu. Co do Włoch, to akurat oni zdobywają medale w szerokim spektrum. Sporty drużynowe, szermierka, żeglarstwo, pływanie, lekka atletyka etc. A i tak w Paryżu wypadli poniżej oczekiwań w LA i szermierce właśnie.
  19. Daniele Orsato has joined the referee committee of the Russian Football Federation https://www.rfs.ru/news/220958
  20. FIS created a wild card rule for this new skier Hirscher who won't have to start with bib #75 or whatever but with #31. Not like that would mean anything come January once the FIS points eventually appear on his ranking but some Swiss guys criticized the idea already https://www.bluewin.ch/en/sport/absolute-cheek-ski-cracks-annoyed-about-star-bonus-for-hirscher-2311053.html
  21. Yes, tennis tournament will be held in Carson which used to host WTA tournament until 2009. Indian Wells is very hot in March already (their traditional ATP & WTA date) and it would be a scorcher in July & August. Plus wind is usually a factor in Indian Wells too
  22. Bitathlon will start soon again plus this new alpine skier Hirscher so there should be some traffic here
  23. Notable nations with no medals (they finished 2nd in the medal table in Paris 1924)
  24. It's been like that for years. And they offered a mortgage of the Pruszków velodrome to get a money loan despite them not owning the velodrome AFAIK? A total mess.
